This role requires a proactive and confident leader with strong decision-making abilities to oversee all activities within the Engineering Department. The Senior Director of Engineering is accountable for guiding the department’s strategy, performance, and deliverables while fostering collaboration across the organization. This candidate will serve as a role model for leadership and provide support to internal teams, as well as maintain professional relationships with customers and external partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise all functions within the Engineering Department, including engineering operations, technical documentation, and records management, ensuring accuracy, quality, and timely completion of departmental deliverables.
- Recruit, develop, and manage engineering personnel, including making decisions related to staffing, performance management, and team development.
- Continuously assess workflows, tools, methodologies, and team capabilities to identify opportunities for efficiency, innovation, and ongoing improvement.
- Define clear expectations for employee performance and provide guidance through routine feedback and structured performance evaluations.
- Direct the identification of market opportunities and competitive trends to support the development of innovative and technologically advanced products.
- Ensure all products meet or exceed required performance standards and align with customer specifications and expectations.
- Maintain accountability for product safety, reliability, and the protection of customer equipment and end users.
- Report directly to the company President, communicating departmental progress, strategic initiatives, and long-term goals.
- Provide strategic input and executive-level support to leadership across other departments, participating in discussions, negotiations, and major organizational decisions.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by company leadership.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Civil, Aeronautical).
- Ten years of directly related design experience.
- Ten years of increasingly complex management experience.
- Strong background in metal (steel and aluminum) fabrication processes and material selections.
- Strong engineering analytical skills (stress and deflection analysis, dynamics/kinematics).
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Excellent organization and planning skills.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
Employees in this role frequently perform tasks that involve sitting, standing, and walking, as well as communicating in person and by phone.
- Regular use of hands for operating office equipment, reaching, and handling materials is required.
- Occasional lifting of items weighing up to approximately 25 pounds may be necessary.
- This position requires the ability to perform visual tasks such as viewing detailed information up close, observing objects at a distance, and adjusting visual focus as needed.
- Work is generally performed in a standard office environment with moderate noise levels.
- At times, employees may also enter operational or production areas where exposure to moving machinery, chemicals, environmental conditions, airborne particles, or elevated noise levels may occur.
