About The Role
We’re looking for a dynamic Account Manager to strategically grow our Whangārei accounts and drive new business in the Northland region. Based in Whangārei, you’ll provide superior phone, email, and web-based customer service while maximising sales and margins through our full product range, including fasteners, roofing, structural steel, piping, fencing, and specialised solutions for construction, infrastructure, rural, and trade sectors.
This role combines hands-on customer account management with internal leadership: you’ll process orders, handle enquiries, support ‘take-off’ schedules from plans where needed, and step in to assist warehouse functions like picking, packing, and dispatch. A key focus is mentoring and coaching the Whangārei sales support team to build their product knowledge, account management, sales techniques, and business development capabilities. You’ll champion a collaborative ‘One Company’ approach, working closely with the Sales Manager, regional team, customer service, product experts, and national functions to ensure seamless support and customer delight.
You’ll proactively identify opportunities, pursue new business, understand customer industries and challenges, address concerns swiftly, and implement growth strategies for products and markets in the area. The position offers a balanced Monday-to-Friday schedule with a strong emphasis on local relationships and no extensive travel.
Key Responsibilities • Strategically manage and expand key accounts through deep relationship building, opportunity identification, solution selling, and regular engagement to exceed sales, margin, and growth targets. • Provide high-level internal and external service: process orders/queries, develop accurate take-offs from plans, support warehouse operations, and ensure fast, accurate delivery for true customer delight. • Mentor and develop the Whangārei sales support team, enhancing their skills in account management, product expertise, sales processes, and business development to strengthen local capability. • Work with the Sales Manager to understand customer sectors (building merchants, trade, construction, rural, etc.), overcome barriers, align on long-term goals, and implement local strategies that leverage our full product portfolio and national expertise. • Pursue new business proactively, monitor market trends and competitors, and contribute to continuous improvement, cost control, and strict health, safety, and environmental standards. • Maintain accurate CRM records, utilise forecasting and sales tools, lead ITM/reseller support in the region, and uphold our core values of United, Open, Trusted, Integrity, and Accountable.
About You
You bring proven account management and customer service success, ideally from the steel, building, or related trade industries, with a track record of profitable growth, relationship selling, and hitting targets. You’re well-organised, confident with diverse customers and products, and comfortable working independently in a busy environment. Strong numerical and communication skills, problem-solving ability, and experience influencing at all levels are essential. Familiarity with Whangārei or Northland markets, reading plans/take-offs, JDE software, or coordinating stock movements is highly valued.
