About the role

Job Summary

The Accountant assists with the accounting function of the school division, including but not limited to such things as school generated funds, accounts payable, accounts receivable, budgeting and year‑end. These functions are necessary to ensure the effective and efficient management, control, safeguarding and accountability of the school division’s financial resources.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Responsible for day‑to‑day supervision of accounting functions.
  • Assists with year‑end audit of the financial statements; in the completion of working papers that will be compliant with Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS), Board of Education and Ministry of Education accounting and reporting guidelines.
  • Assists in the development of the annual budget and maintains budget software program.
  • Assists with developing, implementing and maintaining procedures, processes and documents for school generated funds (SGF) bookkeeping.
  • Train and support business and school‑based staff, monitor for compliance with corporate policies and legislation.
  • Assists in the preparation and analysis of monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports for both internal and external use.
  • Assists with the Registered Charity and annual reporting for the school division and Bursary Fund.
  • Reviews bank reconciliations, deposits, customer invoices and accounts payable payment runs.
  • Prepares and posts monthly accruals and other financial statement adjustments.
  • Reconciles general ledger accounts on a monthly basis to ensure completeness and accuracy of accounting records.
  • Prepares and reconciles GST returns in compliance with Canada Revenue Agency.
  • Prepares and reconciles PST returns in compliance with the Government of Saskatchewan.
  • Provides relief managerial duties for the Business Manager.
  • Assists in the interview, selection and evaluation process of assigned personnel.
  • Performs other duties as may be required or assigned by the Business Manager.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to collect, compile, summarize and analyze large amounts of data.
  • Ability to understand and interpret accounting and tax standards.
  • Proficient understanding of financial statement preparation and audit file working papers.
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting principles.
  • Experience with corporate financial software and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to learn the financial software used by the school division.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all staff and external stakeholders.
  • Possesses strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Maintains a commitment to student and staff privacy.

Education & Qualifications

  • Completion of an accounting degree from a recognized educational institution as approved by the Board of Education.
  • Two (2) years of experience including time in a supervisory role in an accounting function is considered an asset.
  • Proficient in familiarity and use of financial software.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
