Founding Android Platform Engineer
W3Global Inc.
About the role
One of our client's is building a hardened, custom Android platform for deployment across managed device fleets. We are looking for a founding engineer to own this domain end-to-end: from custom OS builds and kernel maintenance to OTA delivery and device security.
About the Role
As a Founding Platform Engineer, you will define the architecture, set the standards, and lead the technical roadmap as we scale. You will work alongside a high-performing engineering organization focused on mission-critical product lines.
What You’ll Do
- AOSP Development: Maintain and extend custom AOSP-derived builds, including device trees, vendor partitions, HAL customizations, and system image signing.
- OTA & Lifecycle: Design reliable end-to-end OTA update systems engineered for degraded environments (phased rollouts, rollbacks, and fault-tolerant installs).
- Kernel Maintenance: Build, patch, and maintain custom Linux kernel images, including module development and security patch integration.
- Security Architecture: Own the secure boot chain (AVB, SELinux policy, code signing) and implement high-assurance protections like tamper detection and remote wipe.
- Compliance: Integrate cryptographic modules aligned with U.S. government cybersecurity frameworks.
- Fleet Management: Architect the strategy for device enrollment, provisioning, and health monitoring across the fleet.
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of SE experience, with 4+ years focused on Android Platform/System-level development (not app-level).
- Expertise in building and flashing custom system images from AOSP.
- Hands-on experience with Android Verified Boot (AVB) and the secure boot chain.
- Linux Kernel proficiency: Building from source, module development, and debugging.
- Familiarity with Android OTA internals (update_engine, A/B partitioning).
- Strong security fundamentals: PKI, FDE/FBE, and key lifecycle management.
- Proficiency in C/C++, Python, and Shell (Java/Kotlin for framework modifications).
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with FIPS 140-2/3 or NIST 800-53 frameworks.
- Experience managing device fleets at scale via Android Enterprise APIs.
- Contributions to AOSP or open-source Android projects.
- Experience with HSM-backed signing infrastructure.
