Summary
We are seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to help drive Bell’s groundbreaking national AI Fabric initiative – an ambitious, first-of-its-kind program that will position Canada as a global leader in sovereign AI. This initiative is building a secure, high-performance AI compute fabric from coast to coast that will accelerate innovation, strengthen national technological independence, and enable next-generation AI-driven services.
In this role, you will design and shape the advanced data center electrical backbone that powers massive GPU clusters, mission-critical AI workloads, and the nation’s most demanding digital infrastructure. This is a rare opportunity to contribute to a high-impact national mission while applying deep technical expertise to systems that will define the future of Canada’s AI capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead electrical system design, review, and optimization for new data center construction, expansions, and retrofits.
- Develop single-line diagrams, load calculations, distribution layouts, and protection coordination studies.
- Evaluate and plan electrical infrastructure, including medium/low voltage switchgear, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, generators, power distribution units (PDUs), remote power panels (RPPs), grounding, and redundancy configurations (N, N+1, 2N, 2N+1).
- Collaborate with architects, mechanical engineers, facilities operations teams, and external partners to ensure designs meet performance, safety, and compliance requirements.
- Participate in site assessments, capacity planning, and operational audits to determine infrastructure readiness and alignment with design standards.
- Provide technical guidance for electrical equipment procurement specifications and ensure vendor solutions meet engineering requirements.
- Support commissioning activities, including factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and integrated systems testing (IST).
- Identify electrical risks and propose design improvements to enhance resilience, efficiency, and scalability.
- Maintain up-to-date documentation, including design packages, operational procedures, and as-built drawings.
- Contribute to long-term infrastructure planning aligned with organizational growth and emerging compute workloads (AI/ML, High-Performance Computing (HPC), GPU clusters).
Key Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering; candidates with P.Eng or professional licensing qualifications are preferred.
- 5-10+ years of electrical design experience in mission-critical facilities (data centers, telecommunications, industrial power systems).
- In-depth understanding of power distribution, emergency/standby systems, UPS technologies, and switchgear operation.
- Familiarity with relevant codes and standards (CSA, OESC, IEEE, NEC/NFPA, TIA 942).
- Experience with high-density and high-availability environments (AI compute, GPU clusters) is preferred.
- Proficiency in design and modeling tools (AutoCAD, Revit, ETAP, SKM, or similar).
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills; ability to collaborate across engineering, operations, and vendor teams.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a focus on reliability, safety, and operational excellence.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting operations teams with troubleshooting or planned electrical maintenance activities.
- Understanding of energy optimization strategies, Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), and sustainability initiatives.
- Background in planning and supporting large-scale infrastructure deployments.
