Backend Engineer - Tech Lead

Our client is a European MedTech software and R&D company developing advanced technologies across medical imaging, robotics, and Software as a Medical Device (SaMD). Their platforms are used by medical device companies and research groups to accelerate innovation in image-guided interventions, AI-powered imaging workflows, and next-generation clinical applications.

The role

In this position, you will join the company as a Senior Fullstack Developer with a strong backend focus, taking ownership of the architecture and technical direction of cloud-based web applications built on top of an established medical imaging platform. Acting as a hands-on Tech Lead, you will drive backend services, APIs, and cloud infrastructure while mentoring developers, defining engineering standards, and contributing to key architectural decisions across the stack.

Key responsibilities

• Lead technical direction across backend architecture, APIs, cloud infrastructure, and deployment strategy. • Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services and RESTful APIs. • Collaborate closely with frontend engineers to develop end-to-end cloud-based web applications. • Own cloud deployment, monitoring, operational reliability, and DevOps best practices. • Drive code quality through reviews, testing strategies, documentation, and engineering standards. • Mentor developers and contribute to technical leadership within the team. • Work cross-functionally with product, R&D, and engineering teams to shape product roadmap and platform capabilities.

Required experience and qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of professional experience in backend or fullstack software engineering. • Strong backend development experience in Python, ideally with FastAPI; experience with Java, Node.js, Go, or C# is also valued. • Proven experience designing and building scalable REST APIs and distributed backend systems. • Strong understanding of relational databases and data modelling, ideally PostgreSQL. • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, including Infrastructure as Code tools like Terraform. • Experience with containerisation and CI/CD workflows using Docker, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or similar technologies. • Strong communication skills and ability to operate effectively within distributed or remote engineering teams. • Previous experience mentoring engineers or acting as a technical lead is highly desirable. • Nice-to-have experience includes Kubernetes, authentication and identity workflows (OAuth2, OIDC, SAML, Keycloak), monitoring and observability tooling, WebSockets/real-time systems, and frontend technologies such as React and TypeScript.
