PromisePublic ensures that MAP’s work is accessible, inclusive, and aligned with disability justice principles. The division supports equitable access across communications, programs, and materials—removing barriers to participation and engagement.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Braille Writer to support the adaptation of MAP’s materials into accessible formats for individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
This role ensures that written content—including educational materials, communications, and resources—is available in Braille and aligned with accessibility standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Transcribe written materials into Braille (literary and/or Nemeth as applicable)
- Adapt educational, program, and communication materials into accessible formats
- Ensure accuracy, clarity, and readability in Braille outputs
- Support accessibility of program materials and resources
- Collaborate with teams to identify materials requiring Braille adaptation
- Ensure alignment with accessibility standards and best practices
- Review Braille materials for accuracy and completeness
- Maintain consistency across adapted materials
- Support development of accessible formatting guidelines
- Work with PromiseLearning, PromiseVoice, and program teams
- Support accessibility efforts across educational and communication content
- Coordinate timelines for material adaptation
- Maintain organized records of adapted materials
- Support tracking of accessibility requests and outputs
- Maintain timely, professional responsiveness via Google Workspace
Qualifications
Required
- Proficiency in Braille transcription (literary Braille required; Nemeth preferred)
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Understanding of accessibility and inclusive communication
- Ability to work with written materials and adapt them appropriately
- Alignment with MAP’s mission and dignity-centered values
Preferred
- Certification in Braille transcription (e.g., UEB)
- Experience working in education or accessibility services
- Familiarity with assistive technologies and accessible formats
- Experience adapting instructional or program materials
Commitment
- Volunteer role
- Approximately 5–10 hours per week
- Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
- Fully remote
