Your role
As part of Symrise's newly established One Sustainability global function and its Center of Excellence Climate, the Carbon Accounting Expert plays a key role in embedding sustainability and ESG performance across the organization and value chain.
The role contributes directly to Symrise's low-carbon transition, circularity strategy, and ESG reporting by delivering robust carbon and life cycle assessments at product, portfolio, and customer levels.
Core activities include:
- Define, calculate, analyze, and report greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at product, portfolio, and customer levels
- Perform detailed carbon footprint and material flow calculations using internal tools and external sources, including LCA literature and consultant studies
- Deliver Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) to support circularity and eco-design strategies, assessing impacts such as carbon, water, land use, biodegradability, and circularity
- Support low-carbon transition plans by evaluating alternative formulations, processes, or sourcing options
- Partner closely with R&D, R&T, formulation and engineering teams to provide carbon and LCA insights for product development and innovation
- Embed sustainability and eco-design principles into product design, development, and innovation initiatives
- Monitor and report progress toward carbon reduction targets at customer portfolio level
- Ensure compliance with environmental and carbon-related regulations and standards
- Contribute to corporate sustainability reporting and disclosures (e.g. GRI, CDP, CSRD) and to target setting initiatives (e.g. SBTi, Net Zero pathways)
- Calculate and manage emission factors and support their deployment (e.g. for Houston roll-out)
- Engage with suppliers to review and validate Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) methodologies, results, and cost impacts
- Contribute to internal decarbonization projects (e.g. CO₂ reduction initiatives on products or processes)
- Participate in external sustainability and industry initiatives (e.g. emissions factor databases, sector working groups such as IOFI)
- Support sustainability strategy development through data, analysis, and contribution to strategic presentations
- Continuously monitor, benchmark, and apply best practices and methodological developments in carbon accounting, LCA, and sustainability
About you
- Engineering degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Chemistry, or a related field
- Proven experience in carbon accounting and/or environmental data analysis
- Strong analytical skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Solid knowledge of greenhouse gas accounting methodologies and emission factors
- Good understanding of environmental regulations and sustainability frameworks
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills in cross-functional environments
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple projects simultaneously
- Strong passion for Sustainability, with the ability to engage, convince, and inspire diverse audiences
- Minimum 3 years of experience in an industrial or corporate environment or consulting
- Fluent in English; German and French are considered an asset
Our offer
- Fixed‑term contract of 9 months, from July 2026 to March 2027
- Location: Rennes
- Home office: up to 2 days per week
- Salary range: €45,000 - €48,000 gross per year
