The Traffic Services Division within the Street Transportation Department is responsible for ensuring the safe movement of traffic and pedestrians. Responsibilities include street signs, traffic signals, left‑turn arrows, school safety, removal of visibility obstructions, on‑street parking, neighborhood cut‑through, traffic safety, and permits to use right‑of‑way.
Currently the Traffic Services Division has a Chief Engineering Technician vacancy assigned in the Streetlighting Section. Primary responsibilities will include and are not limited to:
- Performing single streetlight designs.
- Utility power design review.
- Field inspections relating to streetlighting requests.
- Mid‑block review.
- Easement acquisitions.
- Design requests.
- Investigating streetlighting request.
In addition, the Chief Engineering Technician will assist and support Principal Engineering Technicians as requested in performing duties related to streetlight designs, small cell research, permit reviews, capital improvement projects and working with fellow department staff members.

Ideal Candidate
Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of engineering as applied to the installation of dry utilities in the City's right of way and Capital Improvement Project construction.
- City codes and policies as pertaining to underground utility construction and the ability to communicate with Project Managers, City contractors, utility designers, and contractors.
Ability to:
- Extract and manipulate data and create spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel.
- Demonstrate strong communication and customer service skills.
- Exemplify strong leadership, decision‑making, and problem‑solving skills.
- Multitask and work well under pressure and with deadlines.
Salary
- Pay Range: $29.58 to $45.89 hourly
- Hiring Range: $29.58 to $41.63 hourly

Internal Only: Please understand that this is pay grade 354. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.

Minimum Qualifications
- Five years of experience in paraprofessional engineering work.
- Including two years of paraprofessional civil engineering experience (or one year at the level of Senior Engineering Technician).
- Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
- All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. Preferred Qualifications
The minimum qualifications listed above, plus experience with/in:
- Reading and interpreting maps, graphs, charts, and plans.
- Computer systems such as Kiva, Citizen Serve, TRAACS, AutoCad, GIS mapping, and electronic permitting.
- Microsoft Office full suite of programs.
