About
The Products and Technology Division is the central resource within Dominion Engineering, Inc., an Allied Power company, that deploys custom hardware for nuclear power customers. Control Panel Engineers within the Products and Technology Group execute the required engineering tasks to conceive, design, document, and test the electrical control panels that automate and control mechanical systems. Control Panel Engineers take ownership of dedicated project(s) to ensure all aspects of the electrical design and deployment are executed in accordance with contract requirements and to a level commensurate with the quality the Dominion customer base is used to experiencing.
Project assignments will be coordinated between individual Project Coordinators and the Director of Project Operations to balance staff development needs, the needs of specific projects, and prioritization of needs across projects.

Reports to: Director of Operations – Products and Technology Division
Essential Functions

- Demonstrate the ability to translate a problem statement into a physical system, delivered on time and within budget.
- Design electrical panels for control of mechanical systems, including generation of panel layout drawings, wiring schematics, wiring diagrams, PLC I/O diagrams, etc..
- Execute equipment design activities with respect to component selection, sizing, and NEC Code Compliance.
- Complete standard computations relating to load requirements of wiring or electrical equipment (e.g., transformer sizing, circuit breaker sizing, enclosure cooling, cable tray fill).
- Work with other dedicated Design Engineers to finalize CAD, fabrication drawings, and assembly drawings.
- Understand and evaluate capabilities, strengths, and compromises for common electromechanical system components (e.g., VFDs, pumps, instrumentation, PLCs, etc.).
- Understand functional requirements of the equipment/system and select components/vendors based on technical evaluations.
- Research, read, and interpret manufacturer directions, diagrams, schematics, engineering drawings, and manuals to incorporate technical details into design documentation, completing assigned projects in an effective, efficient manner.
- Develop and execute Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) and/or Site Acceptance Test (SAT) procedures to confirm the hardware prototype satisfies the functional design requirements of a customer contract.
- Support equipment assembly and testing activities, including: assembly of prototype materials to design drawings, set up and execution of factory acceptance testing, troubleshooting equipment operational challenges.
- Demonstrate experience in all aspects of project execution, from conceptualization through final design, procurement, technical documentation, assembly, and testing.
Additional Functions
Subject to company and project needs, the Control Panel Engineer may be called on to perform other functions suited to his/her expertise, including but not limited to:
- Acting as an Individual Contributor on projects unrelated to his/her primary project (e.g., writing procedures, operating instructions, generating figures, etc.).
- Willing to travel up to 20% of the time (e.g., for field implementation of products).
- Supporting internal business initiatives.
Required Competencies
- Demonstrate competence in core electro-mechanical engineering fundamentals as required to document the proposed component design will satisfy the acceptance criteria for use, including:
- Electrical load calculations
- Thermodynamics
- Heat transfer
- Demonstrated experience with Code and Standards Compliance:
- UL508a panel construction guidance
- NEC compliance calculations
- Demonstrated experience with industrial drafting standards for wiring schematics and P&IDs.
- Demonstrated experience with 3D assembly modeling (Solidworks CSWP or equivalent experience).
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while working both independently and as part of a project team.
- Ability to articulate technical ideas and abstract concepts with clear written and verbal communication.
- Ability to identify process gaps and propose/develop improvements on a continuing basis.
Preferred Competencies
- Comprehensive understanding of nuclear work environment and the unique design challenges/requirements thereof.
- Drafting experience in AutoCAD / AutoCAD Electrical.
- Experience in PLC programming for industrial control systems, including development, modification, and troubleshooting of ladder logic and/or function block diagrams.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to work at a desk/computer. The employee frequently is required to walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to navigate industrial environments while wearing PPE, including climbing over and around obstacles, and up and down stairs or ladders. The employee must occasionally work at heights (up to approximately 30 feet above the floor) without experiencing vertigo. The employee must frequently lift or move objects up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move objects up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus.
Required Education, Experience, Certification and Licenses
- ABET-accredited bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field, or equivalent technical experience, and a minimum 5 years of engineering experience
- Experience designing and building tooling and equipment for industrial applications (minimum 5 years)
