The Communication, Marketing and Brand division uses creative and strategic tools to further the mission of the National Geographic Society, while maintaining our place as one of the world’s most trusted nonprofit organizations and global brands. The division’s creative minds develop and execute mission-driven, on-brand strategies, unifying efforts across owned and operated channels, strategic partners and earned media. The team includes seven integrated departments: Creative Studio, Integrated Brand Marketing, Partnership Marketing, MarCom Operations and Internal Communications, Strategic Communications, Executive Communications, and Crisis Communications and Public Relations.

The Coordinator, Social Media Community Engagement supports the Society’s social media community management efforts and social listening. Part of the Social Media and Digital Engagement team within Integrated Brand Marketing, this role contributes to increasing reach, engagement and brand relevancy through social media. Reports to the Senior Manager, Social Media.

Responsibilities

Social Media Community Engagement (50%)

  • Support scheduling daily publishing of content across Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads and YouTube, maintaining content calendar.
  • Implement community engagement efforts across all social media channels with supervisor support.
  • Monitor, respond to and engage with comments, direct messages, mentions and tags in brand voice.
  • Monitor social media for opportunities to engage in cultural moments and conversations beyond owned posts.
  • Monitor Explorers’ social media accounts and strategically engage and elevate high-quality user-generated content.
  • Research emerging creators for deeper relationships.
  • Coordinate with Communications, Brand and Marketing teams, program teams and Explorers on social media questions.
  • Identify comments posing reputational risks or community backlash and work with Senior Manager to de-escalate.
  • Support crisis communication protocols for social media during crises.

Social Listening (40%)

  • Build and refine social listening reports monitoring content and conversations about the Society and National Geographic brand.
  • Monitor social media sentiment, trends and behavioral signals.
  • Collaborate with Integrated Brand Marketing colleagues to share social listening insights supporting brand health.
  • Use social listening to discover untagged mentions and real-time marketing moments for proactive engagement.
  • Conduct regular social listening and competitive audits.
  • Develop social listening reports for campaigns, reputational risks or as needed.

Analytics and Insights (10%)

  • Support regular reports tracking community engagement KPIs including engagement, sentiment and growth.
  • Share social listening and community insights to refine social strategy and content.
  • Coordinate with Manager, Analytics and Insights to share social channel engagement data as part of larger analytics initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; credentials in digital marketing, direct marketing or social media.
  • 2+ years of social media or digital experience.
  • Active social media user with understanding of Instagram, Threads, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube.
  • Experience with digital social media tools (e.g., Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Sprinklr) including calendaring, analytics, community management and social listening.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects under deadlines with changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to maintain consistent brand voice.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Digital native immersed in social media culture, able to identify appropriate trends.
  • Experience implementing social media strategies for brands or nonprofits.
  • Experience identifying compelling stories and content from community contributors.
  • Experience working with influencer or creator content communities is a plus.

  • Hourly range: $25.13 - $26.45.

Work Arrangement

Hybrid: Staff work at Base Camp two days each week (Tuesday and Wednesday) with option for additional days.
