About the Position
The Cybersecurity I is with the Homeland Security Department, JACKSON, MS, and will be responsible for:
- Assist in monitoring organizational networks, systems, and applications for security threats, vulnerabilities, and suspicious activity.
- Support the implementation and maintenance of cybersecurity tools such as firewalls, antivirus software, endpoint protection, and intrusion detection systems.
- Review system logs, alerts, and reports to identify potential security incidents and escalate issues as needed.
- Participate in incident response activities, including documentation, containment, and recovery efforts under senior staff guidance.
- Conduct routine vulnerability scans and assist in remediation efforts to address identified risks.
- Help enforce security policies, procedures, and best practices across the organization.
- Assist with user access management, including account creation, password resets, and permission reviews.
- Provide basic cybersecurity awareness support to staff, including guidance on phishing, password security, and safe computing practices.
- Maintain accurate documentation of security incidents, system configurations, and response actions.
- Support system updates, patch management, and security configuration changes.
- Assist in conducting risk assessments and compliance checks in alignment with state, federal, or agency standards.
- Collaborate with IT staff to ensure systems are secure, updated, and functioning properly.
- Stay informed on emerging cybersecurity threats, trends, and technologies.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

- Risk Management
- Understanding of firewalls, proxies, SIEM, antivirus and IDPS concepts.
Preferred Qualifications
Typically requires bachelor’s degree and 0-2 years of relevant experience. Hiring agency preferred qualifications: At least 3 years of experience in cybersecurity/technology-related fields with experience in analyzing threats, incidents, and cyber threat trends. Also, research skills and the ability to synthesize information from multiple sources.
