The Data Engineering Manager leads and mentors a team of data engineers responsible for designing, developing, and delivering enterprise‑grade, analytics‑ready data products on Microsoft Fabric and Azure. This is a hands‑on player‑coach role, contributing directly to data architecture, modeling, and pipeline development while setting technical standards and best practices for the team. Reporting to the Director of Data & Analytics, this role owns key aspects of SNDL’s Azure‑ and Fabric‑based data platform, supports the evolution of a data mesh approach, and ensures data products are trusted, well‑governed, and aligned with business outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of data engineers delivering domain‑owned data products.
- Foster a culture of ownership, quality, and collaboration aligned with data mesh principles.
- Define team goals, measure performance, and support career development.
Technical Strategy & Execution
- Partner with the Director, Data & Analytics to define and execute SNDL’s Azure and Microsoft Fabric data architecture.
- Own architectural decisions including Lakehouse vs Warehouse, ingestion vs shortcuts, and performance optimization.
- Establish standards for data modeling (conceptual, logical, physical) to ensure consistency across domains and analytics use cases.
- Define and enforce best practices for CI/CD, version control, environment separation (Dev/Test/Prod), testing, and monitoring within Fabric and Azure DevOps.
- Design and implement scalable governance controls, including data catalogs, lineage, security, and access management.
Hands‑On Data Engineering
- Design and build Fabric Lakehouses and Warehouses using Medallion Architecture (Bronze/Silver/Gold).
- Develop ingestion, transformation, and orchestration pipelines using Fabric Data Factory, Fabric Notebooks (Spark/Python), and T‑SQL.
- Implement OneLake‑centric integration patterns, including Fabric Shortcuts for Dynamics 365 F&O, Dataverse, and other enterprise sources.
- Lead and contribute to dimensional and analytical data modeling to support Power BI semantic models.
- Act as a control owner for analytics data processes, ensuring compliance with internal controls, SOX, and audit requirements.
Collaboration
- Work with the team’s business analyst, data product owners, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into technical deliverables and robust data products.
- Develop and promote a self‑service analytics culture by enabling business teams to easily access and use trusted data products.
- Engage with application development teams to provision data products that serve SNDL’s application (e.g. e‑commerce) data needs.
Qualifications
- 5+ years in data engineering with at least 2+ years managing data engineering teams.
- Proven experience designing and delivering enterprise‑scale data platforms on Azure and Microsoft Fabric.
- Hands‑on expertise with Microsoft Fabric components (Lakehouse, Data Warehouse, Data Factory).
- Strong SQL and stored procedure development skills and experience with medallion/layered architecture/data warehouse patterns.
- Strong Azure DevOps skills to deliver CI/CD data pipelines with an emphasis on version control and segregation of duties pertaining to code promotion to production environments.
- Experience integrating Fabric with enterprise systems such as Dynamics 365 F&O or similar ERP/CRM platforms.
- Strong leadership skills with a track record of coaching and developing high‑performing data engineering teams.
- Knowledge of Power BI semantic models and report development.
- Familiarity with governance tools, data catalogs, and lineage tracking in Fabric.
- Experience operating in SOX‑regulated or audit‑driven environments.
