• Location: Topeka, KS
• Type: Contract
• Pay: $60–$80/hr on W2
• Work Authorization: USC only
• Relocation: Candidates willing to relocate to Topeka, KS will be fully considered

We are looking for a Design or Electrical Engineer with Protection & Controls experience to support engineering design work related to electric substations, transmission lines, generation equipment control systems, and fault protection systems.

The ideal candidate should have a strong background in electrical design, protection and control drawings, schematics, relay systems, and utility-related engineering documentation.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform engineering design for electric substation, transmission line, and generation equipment control and protection systems.
• Review and redline substation protection and transmission line protection & control drawings.
• Work with schematic, wiring, logic, and elementary diagrams.
• Support development of protective relay systems, metering, SCADA, relay logic, and related design documentation.
• Assist with project scopes, bills of material, cost estimates, and engineering documentation.
• Review technical drawings and specifications to ensure compliance with company standards, safety requirements, and applicable codes.
• Support operations and construction teams with troubleshooting, testing, commissioning, failure analysis, and technical issue resolution.
• Work closely with System Protection Engineers, designers, and technicians to ensure accurate and timely project delivery.

Required Skills & Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• Experience with protection and control designs for substations, transmission lines, or generation equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, logic diagrams, and electrical drawings.
• Knowledge of generation, transmission, and distribution relays and associated protection schemes.
• Ability to learn and apply company-specific design philosophy and standards.
• Strong attention to detail, proofreading ability, and organizational skills.
• Dependable, self-motivated, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Software Requirements:

• AutoCAD
• Bluebeam
• Microsoft Office tools, including Word and Excel

Preferred Experience:

• Utility industry experience related to electric substation, generation, and transmission line equipment control and fault protection systems.
• Experience developing elementary drawings, relay logic, relay settings, and system protection designs.
• Familiarity with SPP, NERC, FERC, or similar reporting and compliance requirements is a plus.
