DevOps / Platform Engineer
CALIMA Safety GmbH
About the role
About CALIMA
CALIMA is a Berlin-based B2B SaaS startup with the mission to make work safety simpler, more reliable, and more effective through digital and innovative solutions. Our software helps companies ensure that lone workers receive quick assistance in emergencies. CALIMA is used by hundreds of companies and protects thousands of employees daily.
We are a small, ambitious team with a high standard of quality, working pragmatically and close to the product. We are looking for people who not only complete tasks but also take responsibility, think along, and actively improve our processes.
Your Role
As a DevOps / Platform Engineer, you play a key role in the stability, security, and scalability of our entire platform. You will be responsible for the infrastructure of a security-critical product that protects thousands of lone workers daily, ensuring our systems run robustly, performantly, and with high availability.
Quality is paramount at CALIMA: We rely on EU providers (OVH and Hetzner) and operate a multi-cloud setup for resilience, data sovereignty, and cost control – with a focus on EU hosting and data protection.
Important: We are a small tech team. This means a lot of ownership, creative freedom, and direct impact for you – but also the willingness to take on topics end-to-end. We are looking for someone with a high standard of quality who proactively identifies, prioritizes, and implements topics – from architectural decisions to operational excellence in production.
Responsibilities
Infrastructure & Platform
- Further development of our Kubernetes infrastructure (OVH & Hetzner Multi-Cloud, Multi-Region, Zero Downtime Deployments)
- Maintenance and expansion of our Infrastructure-as-Code landscape (Terraform / OpenTofu, Private Networks, Databases, Storage, Security, Monitoring, etc.)
- Support in operating dedicated hosting setups for enterprise clients
Reliability & Observability
- Building and continuous improvement of logs, metrics, traces
- Ensuring stability, performance, and availability of our systems
- Further development of deployment and release processes (Zero Downtime)
Security & Compliance
- Implementation of Security Best Practices (IAM, Secrets, Hardening, Encryption, Backups)
- Support in meeting security and compliance requirements (e.g., ISO 27001, GDPR)
Incident Management
- Participation in a fairly organized on-call rotation
- Building and improving alerting, incident, and disaster recovery processes
- Creation of runbooks, postmortems, and sustainable improvements
Requirements
- Several years of experience (guideline: 5+ years) as a DevOps/Platform Engineer or in a similar role in a Cloud/SaaS environment
- You have already carried broad responsibility, ideally in startups/small teams or roles with end-to-end ownership
- Very good knowledge of Kubernetes (Deployment, Networking, Ingress, Observability, Scaling) and modern EU cloud infrastructure (e.g., OVH and Hetzner)
- Solid experience with Infrastructure-as-Code, preferably Terraform/OpenTofu, including structuring modules, state, secrets, and environments
- Proficient use of monitoring, logging, and alerting tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/Loki or comparable solutions)
- Understanding of cloud security topics: networks, secret management, encryption, and secure configurations
- Experience with highly available, business-critical systems – ideally in a B2B SaaS or security-relevant context
- Structured, self-reliant, and quality-conscious working style with a pragmatic understanding of priorities (feature vs. stability vs. tech debt)
- Fluent German skills – our meetings are held in German
- Good English skills
