About the role
Position Summary
Reporting to the General Manager and a member of the leadership team at RTI Claro, a division of Howmet Aerospace, the Director of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) is responsible for the overall management of the facility’s EHS program.
The individual in this role ensures a safe environment for all employees, contractors, and visitors, while maintaining full compliance with all federal and provincial regulations, including those of CNESST.
This role also ensures environmental compliance, hazardous materials management, industrial hygiene, fire safety, and risk management. The EHS Director strategically reduces risks for all stakeholders through a proactive and continuous improvement-driven approach, while fostering a strong and sustainable safety culture.
Based on business needs, this role could also be asked to lead major continuous improvement initiatives to support the shop’s operational performance while effectively maintaining the EHS program.
Key Responsibilities
Regulatory Compliance and EHS Program Management
- Collaborate with the corporate EHS department to lead and manage the facility’s EHS program.
- Maintain a strong floor presence and conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance with regulations and Howmet policies.
- Ensure full compliance with occupational health and safety requirements, including prevention programs, site-specific health programs, risk assessments, and safety committee obligations.
- Manage WHMIS 2015: product inventory, SDS, labeling, training, and regulatory compliance.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate risks related to health, safety, environment, and psychosocial risks.
- Obtain, maintain, and ensure compliance with environmental permits, approvals, and reporting (air, water, waste, EPA, etc.).
- Coordinate the development, implementation, and maintenance of environmental management systems required for third-party certifications (ISO, corporate audits).
- Ensure compliance with all environmental permits, regulations, plans, and programs.
- Maintain full documentation of EHS records (incidents, investigations, inspections, training, permits, audits).
Operations, Prevention, and Risk Management
- Work with the Operations Director to establish and achieve annual safety goals and report daily EHS performance.
- Conduct Job Safety Analyses (JSA), safety reviews, issue permits (hot work, confined space, lockout/tagout), and ensure contractor compliance.
- Lead incident investigations and ensure implementation of corrective actions.
- Oversee selection, standardization, and compliance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in accordance with CSA standards.
- Plan, update, and coordinate the Emergency Response Plan, including mandatory evacuation drills.
- Lead the First Aid team and act as liaison with local emergency services.
Labor Relations and Internal Collaboration
- Work with the Health and Safety Committee to implement corrective actions in response to employee concerns (unionized and non-unionized).
- Manage the joint EHS committee and actively participate in union-management meetings on health and safety matters.
- Collaborate with Human Resources to manage workers’ compensation programs (CNESST) and return-to-work cases.
- Support workplace violence and harassment prevention in collaboration with HR.
Strategic Leadership and Continuous Improvement
- Present EHS metrics to the leadership team and influence operational decisions by integrating the EHS perspective.
- Plan and lead internal EHS audits and coordinate external audits (corporate, CNESST, environmental).
- Lead or support Lean / Six Sigma initiatives focused on process improvement and risk reduction.
- Develop and track EHS performance indicators (frequency rate, severity, compliance, corrective actions, environmental performance).
Other Responsibilities
- Stay current on provincial and federal regulatory changes.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in EHS, Engineering, or Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics).
- 7+ years of progressive EHS experience in an industrial environment, including 5+ years in management role.
- Strong knowledge of federal and provincial regulations.
- Proficiency in MS Office tools.
- Leadership or supervisory experience.
- Experience in a unionized environment (strong asset).
- Bilingual (French & English).
Other Requirements
- Occasional outdoor work (cold weather, stairs, ladders)
- Minimal travel within Canada and the United States
