About the role

Role Overview

The Instrumentation Director is responsible for leading the strategy, design, implementation, and maintenance of all instrumentation and control systems across mining operations. This role ensures safe, reliable, and efficient monitoring and control of mining processes, including extraction, processing, and materials handling systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the company-wide instrumentation and control systems strategy.
  • Lead the transition toward advanced automation, remote monitoring, and digital mining technologies.
  • Oversee design, installation, calibration, and maintenance of instrumentation systems across mining sites.
  • Ensure accurate measurement and control of key parameters such as pressure, flow, temperature, level, vibration, and gas detection.
  • Support commissioning of new plant and equipment with robust instrumentation integration.
  • Troubleshoot complex instrumentation and control system failures and drive root cause analysis.
  • Ensure all instrumentation systems meet regulatory, environmental, and safety standards.
  • Support process safety management (PSM) and hazard identification studies (HAZOP, LOPA).
  • Maintain compliance with mining regulations and internal governance frameworks.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop instrumentation engineers, technicians, and contractors.
  • Allocate resources effectively across multiple mining sites or projects.
  • Foster a culture of technical excellence, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Manage instrumentation scope for capital projects, upgrades, and expansions.
  • Oversee budgets, procurement, vendor selection, and contractor performance.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and within budget.
  • Drive adoption of SCADA, DCS, PLC systems, and industrial IoT solutions.
  • Collaborate with IT/OT teams to integrate instrumentation data into enterprise systems.
  • Promote data-driven decision-making through real-time monitoring and analytics.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation, Control Systems Engineering, or related field.
  • 10–15+ years in instrumentation and control systems, preferably in mining, oil & gas, or heavy industry.
  • Minimum 5 years in a senior leadership or director-level role.
  • Strong experience with large-scale mining or mineral processing operations.
  • Expertise in PLC, SCADA, DCS, and industrial control systems.
  • Strong knowledge of field instrumentation (sensors, transmitters, analyzers).
  • Experience with automation systems and industrial communication protocols (Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP).
