As the world’s leading animal photojournalism agency, it is our mission to document the stories of animals in the human environment — those used for food, fashion, entertainment, and experimentation — and to connect those stories to the individuals and organizations who can amplify their reach.
Our expanding collection of world-class images and videos of animal industries around the world is accessed daily by media, educators, policy-makers, and individuals. As the public’s interest in animal issues increases, our photo agency is looking for someone to help our team connect our visuals with the clients that need to access them.
We Animals Media is looking for a Director of Marketing and Media Outreach. The successful incumbent will be responsible for We Animals Media’s overall marketing strategy and media outreach. As an ideal candidate for this role, you are an energetic person who is always thinking a few steps ahead, and you passionately believe that animal photojournalism needs to be amplified. In this role you will be responsible for the following:
Marketing Communications and Content Management
- Create and execute a marketing and outreach strategy to ensure WAM’s visuals are promoted to and regularly accessed by journalists, media outlets, and NGOs
- Conduct outreach to NGOs to promote use of WAM’s visuals, leveraging existing channels and direct relationships
- Work closely with the Assignments team to keep on top of upcoming field work and proactively identify promotion and coverage opportunities
- Work with partnering NGOs to identify additional avenues for promoting campaign visuals and related materials
- Oversee style and tone on all external communications, working closely with the Founder and the Fundraising Manager to ensure cohesive tone, and with the Brand Manager to ensure consistent brand image
- Lead the marketing strategy on other WAM projects such as new product or service launches
- Oversee WAM’s web content calendar, coordinating efforts with the Social Media team. This includes: promoting new visuals added to our collection on the WAM website, promoting older visual content as it becomes relevant to current events, and sharing updates and announcements with WAM’s intended audiences
- Oversee the development and roll out of WAM’s monthly newsletter, coordinating with the Copywriter/Editor
- Use analytics and Mailchimp reporting to determine which messaging is effective and how to tweak content to garner greater engagement
- Actively identify new opportunities for promoting the visibility of WAM’s visuals
Media Relations
- Actively build relationships with media outlets and journalists, engaging these relationships to notify them of relevant content, projects, and awards
- Be alert and responsive to emerging issues, engage outlets in using our work
- Develop pitches, press releases, and press kits as required
- Solicit assignment opportunities from outlets and ensure WAM is top-of-mind for all animal photojournalism field work
Management
- Directly supervise the Brand Manager and Social Media Manager
- Coordinate and act as the main contact person for the Digital Marketing Specialist and Copywriter/Editor role
- Set goals and key performance indicators with the WAM team and support the development and ongoing monitoring, measurement, and evaluation of our work
- Manage a departmental budget
Required experience, skills, and qualities
Qualified applicants will have most or all of the following attributes:
- A minimum of 4 years experience working in a communications leadership role
- Demonstrated experience working within a media environment and conducting outreach to journalists and media outlets; ability to cultivate and maintain new relationships
- Excellent writing and editing skills; must be able to draft key messages, including press releases and blog posts
- Demonstrated experience managing a team, including experience working effectively with team members in remote locations
- Proactive; ability to identify new opportunities to forward WAM’s mission
- Ability to adjust priorities and be responsive to changing internal and external environments
- Demonstrated experience using communication analytics tools to gain insights and adapt messaging or tactics accordingly
- Strong project and time management skills; motivated to create plans and track goals while maintaining the ability to adapt plans when necessary
- Energetic and enthusiastic
- Fluent in English
Familiarity with, and dedication to, the global animal protection movement is a strong asset
A degree in marketing, communications, journalism, or equivalent is an asset but is not required
Experience working in the context of photography or a photo agency is an asset but is not required

We are in start-up phase as a growing organization, which means we are actively learning together as we evolve as a non-profit photojournalism agency.
