About the Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Director of Engineering to lead, develop, and grow an engineering team. This is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing engineering strategy, technical standards, design coordination, consultant management, and the development of an internal engineering team capable of supporting complex steel building and industrial project delivery.

The successful candidate will bring strong structural engineering expertise, ideally in steel building systems, pre-engineered buildings, and industrial/commercial construction. In addition to leading structural engineering, this role will be responsible for building and managing the broader engineering framework required to support multi-discipline project delivery, including structural, foundations, mechanical, electrical, architectural, cladding, roofing, and insulated metal panel systems.

This is a hands-on leadership role suited to a professional who can operate at both a strategic and technical level. The Director of Engineering will be expected to provide senior technical oversight, build internal capability, manage external consultants/resources, support project execution, and establish the systems, standards, and processes required for consistent, high-quality engineering deliverables. Key Responsibilities Engineering Leadership & Department Development • Lead and develop the company’s engineering function, including structural engineering and coordination of related disciplines. • Build, mentor, and manage an engineering team capable of supporting current and future project demands. • Identify internal staffing needs and support recruitment, onboarding, training, and development of engineering personnel. • Establish clear roles, responsibilities, workflows, and accountability within the engineering department. • Provide leadership across structural, foundation, mechanical, electrical, architectural, cladding, roofing, and IMP-related engineering coordination. • Develop the engineering department into a reliable internal resource for project management, fabrication, procurement, estimating, and construction support. • Set department priorities and ensure engineering resources are aligned with project schedules and company objectives. • Support the long-term development of internal engineering capability, reducing reliance on informal processes and improving consistency across projects. Technical Oversight & Engineering Quality • Provide senior technical review and oversight of structural engineering work for steel building systems, pre-engineered buildings, conventional steel structures, and related components. • Oversee design calculations, connection design, engineering drawings, shop drawing reviews, fabrication details, and erection-related engineering deliverables. • Review and stamp engineering packages as required, within professional competency and applicable regulations. • Ensure engineering deliverables comply with applicable codes, standards, project specifications, client requirements, and company practices. • Ensure designs are practical, constructible, cost-effective, and aligned with fabrication and erection requirements. • Lead technical problem-solving on complex design, fabrication, site, or coordination issues. • Support value engineering initiatives when required to improve material efficiency, constructability, schedule, and cost outcomes. • Maintain a strong focus on engineering quality, accuracy, completeness, and professional accountability. Multi-Discipline Engineering Coordination • Oversee coordination between structural engineering and other project disciplines, including foundations, mechanical, electrical, architectural, cladding, roofing, and IMP systems. • Ensure interface points between building systems are properly reviewed, coordinated, and documented. • Manage technical coordination with third-party engineers, architects, consultants, partners, vendors, and specialty designers. • Ensure external engineering and design partners produce deliverables that meet company standards, quality expectations, project requirements, and schedule commitments. • Support the development of coordinated design packages suitable for fabrication, procurement, shipping, and site installation. • Identify engineering gaps, scope overlaps, and design risks early in the project lifecycle. • Ensure the company has a clear technical approach for managing both internal and external engineering responsibilities. Project Support & Execution • Provide senior engineering support throughout all phases of a project, from pre-contract design review through detailing, fabrication, delivery, and erection support. • Work closely with project management teams to ensure engineering deliverables are completed on time and aligned with project schedules. • Support responses to RFIs, client comments, technical queries, change requests, and design clarifications. • Assist project teams in resolving technical issues related to design, detailing, fabrication, shipping, and field installation. • Coordinate with manufacturing, procurement, logistics, and construction teams to support practical and efficient project execution. • Participate in client, consultant, and contractor meetings where senior technical input is required. • Support project risk reviews by identifying potential technical, schedule, cost, or constructability concerns. • Provide technical support to project teams while ensuring that engineering issues are properly prioritized and resolved.

Standards, Systems & Continuous Improvement • Develop, implement, and maintain company engineering standards, design practices, templates, checklists, review procedures, and calculation methods. • Establish consistent processes for engineering review, consultant coordination, drawing approval, technical documentation, and quality control. • Create scalable engineering systems that support company growth and reduce reliance on individual-specific knowledge or informal workflows. • Promote continuous improvement in design efficiency, drawing quality, engineering coordination, and technical risk management. • Stay current with applicable building codes, industry standards, design methods, steel industry practices, and emerging technologies. • Ensure lessons learned from active and completed projects are incorporated into future engineering standards and practices. • Support the development of internal technical documentation, standard details, design guides, and department procedures. Pre-Contract, Estimating & Business Development Support • Support pre-contract and sales teams with engineering input during proposal development. • Assist with preliminary engineering reviews, schematic designs, feasibility assessments, engineering schedules, and design assumptions. • Provide technical input on project scope, exclusions, risks, engineering hours, consultant requirements, and design approach. • Support value engineering and alternate design strategies during the bidding and negotiation phase. • Help assess whether proposed project scopes align with company capabilities, engineering resources, and technical risk tolerance. • Assist in identifying engineering risks, coordination requirements, and discipline gaps prior to contract award. What the successful candidate will bring • Degree in Civil / Structural Engineering and PEng • 10+ years of progressive engineering experience, with significant experience in structural steel, building systems, industrial/commercial construction, or related project delivery. • Previous experience in an engineering leadership, engineering manager, lead engineer, or director-level role. • Strong technical knowledge of structural steel design, connection design, fabrication, detailing, and erection considerations. • Experience with conventional steel and pre-engineered building systems considered a significant asset. • Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including CSA, NBC, AISC, and related industry standards. • Experience managing or coordinating external engineering consultants, detailers, architects, and specialty design firms is an asset. • Demonstrated ability to review and approve engineering packages, calculations, shop drawings, fabrication details, and erection-related documentation. • Experience coordinating multi-discipline design interfaces, including structural, foundations, mechanical, electrical, architectural, cladding, roofing, and IMP systems. • Strong understanding of constructability, fabrication efficiency, cost control, and project execution requirements. • Experience building teams, developing processes, and improving engineering department systems. • Familiarity with engineering and design software such as RISA, ETABS, SAP2000, Revit, Tekla, AutoCAD, or similar platforms. • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with clients, consultants, internal teams, and external partners.

In return, you can expect: • Competitive salary based on experience ($150,000 - $180,000), however if you have more experience, the range will clearly increase • Bonus and full benefits package • Opportunity to travel to remote sites globally. • Lead engineering during a significant growth period
