Globe 24-7, in partnership with a key global mining client, is working together to source an experienced and qualified professional to join their Global Projects function in South Africa.
The Role
The Director of Project Engineering will lead the engineering and design delivery of a global pipeline of organic growth projects across mining infrastructure, process plants, and related assets.
The role will oversee multidisciplinary engineering teams and EPCM contractors, supporting projects from conceptual studies through to execution and commissioning. Responsibilities include driving engineering best practices, design processes, scope development, cost estimation, and technical governance across both open pit and underground mining projects.
The successful candidate will provide technical leadership to Study Directors and Construction Managers, ensuring projects are delivered in line with company standards, regulatory requirements, sustainability objectives, and operational goals. The role will also provide technical support and troubleshooting assistance to operational sites when required.
The Responsibilities
Context setting/long term planning:
- Executes strategic goals, defines objectives, and ensures alignment across teams for effective project delivery.
- Develop and monitor best practice operational systems, design guidelines, and quality control measures for the Global Project Engineering function.
Budget development and delivery:
- Responsible for accurate cost estimation, resource planning, risk reduction, and managing timelines and finances to ensure projects achieve their milestones and financial targets.
People capability:
- Manage, mentor, and inspire global design and project engineering management teams, fostering a culture of technical excellence and accountability.
Effectiveness/Capacity Improvement via Systems:
- Drive systematic improvement through the adoption of advanced engineering principles, innovative technologies, and efficient systems to reduce costs and enhance project lifecycles.
Stakeholder & Contract Management:
- Ensure seamless collaboration and communication with clients, contractors, and internal teams to achieve successful project outcomes.
- Manage large-value, complex, and long-duration engineering and design contracts, including the appointment and oversight of external consultants and EPCM contractors.
Risk Management & Safety:
- Identify, mitigate, and manage project risks while implementing safety measures to ensure compliance, operational integrity, and project security.
The Requirements
- Minimum 15 years’ engineering experience within the mining industry
- Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
- Registered Professional Engineer with ECSA
- Strong experience across infrastructure, open pit and underground mining, and process plant projects
- Strong engineering design experience is essential
- Strong commercial and contractual project management background
- Senior management experience, preferably within an Owner’s Team environment
- Proven experience managing EP, EPCM, EPC contractors, and specialist consultants across project study, design, and execution phases
- Demonstrated ability to lead global, decentralized teams and manage complex stakeholder environments
- International project exposure is essential
- Willingness to travel globally
- South African working rights required
