About the role
Role Summary/Purpose
Senior Electrical Power Systems Engineer responsible for the design of electrical power systems supporting a small modular reactor program. This includes design, analysis, procurement, and integration of systems from main generator and grid connection to in-plant distribution and end-use loads.
Essential Responsibilities
- System Architecture: Lead design and integration of SC1/Class 1E (safety-related), SC2, and SC3 electrical systems, including Medium Voltage (MV) and Low Voltage (LV) distribution
- Analysis & Modeling: Perform electrical studies such as load flow, short circuit, motor starting, and protective relay coordination using ETAP
- Engineering Deliverables: Prepare specifications, electrical load lists, one-line diagrams, calculations, schematics, and 3-line diagrams; ensure quality, budget, and schedule compliance
- Equipment Specification: Develop procurement specifications for transformers, switchgear, diesel generators, and UPS systems; collaborate with suppliers
- Regulatory Compliance: Support licensing processes and ensure compliance with nuclear regulatory standards
- Grid Integration: Coordinate with transmission providers for interconnection agreements and grid compliance
- Codes & Standards: Apply relevant electrical codes and standards (IEEE, IEC, CSA, NEC)
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (Master’s preferred)
- Professional Engineering License: US (PE) or Canada (PEng)
- 8+ years of experience in high-reliability industries (nuclear, power, oil & gas, marine, military, etc.)
- Strong proficiency in PC and productivity tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Project, Visio)
Desired Characteristics
- Advanced degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Nuclear, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or related field
- Ability to independently design and draft using AutoCAD or MicroStation
- Experience with modern engineering and collaboration tools:
- Hexagon SmartPlant (SPEL)
- Confluence / Atlassian
- DOORS NextGen / IBM
- Visio / AutoCAD
- Simulation tools (Easy5, Simulink/MATLAB, Mathcad, ETAP, SKM)
- ENOVIA or similar PLM/BOM tools
- Strong Protection & Control experience
- Grid interface experience
- Generator and large power transformer protection
- Programming and setting GE Multilin and SEL relays
