Civil / Structural Engineering Department Manager

About the Role

An established, privately held industrial engineering and design-build firm is seeking an experienced Civil / Structural Engineering Department Manager to lead its civil/structural discipline. This role combines technical leadership, people management, and hands-on engineering work. The successful candidate will act as the senior technical authority for civil/structural projects while managing, mentoring, and developing a team of engineers and designers.

Note: This position is strictly focused on industrial facilities. No residential, commercial, or retail project experience is applicable.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the Civil/Structural Engineering department
• Schedule staff and resources in coordination with project leadership
• Mentor engineers; conduct performance reviews and support professional development
• Participate in hiring and workforce planning
• Serve as Lead Civil/Structural Engineer on projects
• Prepare, review, and approve engineering designs, drawings, and calculations
• Perform advanced structural design of:
  • Steel structures
  • Foundations (concrete and masonry)
  • Platforms, buildings, and pipe racks
• Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and internal quality procedures
• Review contractor bids and prepare bid tabulations
• Resolve field design and constructability issues
• Coordinate with clients, contractors, and internal project teams
• Provide professional engineering seal for permitting and approvals
• Visit client facilities as needed, including work at heights

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (accredited)
• Active Professional Engineer (PE) license
• Ability to provide a professional engineering seal
• Industrial structural design experience (required)
• Either 20+ years of experience in industrial sectors such as chemical, petrochemical, manufacturing, polymers, or resins OR 10+ years of relevant consulting experience
• Strong knowledge of building codes related to civil/structural design
• Prior project management experience
• Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills
