About the Role
An established, privately held industrial engineering and design-build firm is seeking an experienced Civil / Structural Engineering Department Manager to lead its civil/structural discipline. This role combines technical leadership, people management, and hands-on engineering work. The successful candidate will act as the senior technical authority for civil/structural projects while managing, mentoring, and developing a team of engineers and designers.
Note: This position is strictly focused on industrial facilities. No residential, commercial, or retail project experience is applicable.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the Civil/Structural Engineering department
- Schedule staff and resources in coordination with project leadership
- Mentor engineers; conduct performance reviews and support professional development
- Participate in hiring and workforce planning
- Serve as Lead Civil/Structural Engineer on projects
- Prepare, review, and approve engineering designs, drawings, and calculations
- Perform advanced structural design of:
- Steel structures
- Foundations (concrete and masonry)
- Platforms, buildings, and pipe racks
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and internal quality procedures
- Review contractor bids and prepare bid tabulations
- Resolve field design and constructability issues
- Coordinate with clients, contractors, and internal project teams
- Provide professional engineering seal for permitting and approvals
- Visit client facilities as needed, including work at heights
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (accredited)
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license
- Ability to provide a professional engineering seal
- Industrial structural design experience (required)
- Either 20+ years of experience in industrial sectors such as chemical, petrochemical, manufacturing, polymers, or resins OR 10+ years of relevant consulting experience
- Strong knowledge of building codes related to civil/structural design
- Prior project management experience
- Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills
