About the role

Introduction

Northern Cables Inc. is a Canadian-owned and operated manufacturer of commercial and industrial power cables. Founded and built in Eastern Ontario, the company has grown into a leading North American supplier, with over 300 employees across three manufacturing facilities. Its products support critical applications in mining, infrastructure, transit, and large-scale commercial projects.

Specializing in armoured cables, copper, and aluminum, Northern Cables operates a highly integrated manufacturing model, drawing and stranding its own conductors and producing finished cable entirely in-house. The organization sources the majority of its raw materials from North America and supports a broad customer base across Canada and the United States.

The business is now entering a new phase of evolution, as it transitions from a historically shareholder-led organization to a more structured, management-driven model. Backed by a multi-year succession plan and significant ongoing investment in capital, automation, and facility expansion, Northern Cables is continuing to scale both its operations and leadership framework.

Within this context, the Engineering Manager role is a key leadership position with responsibility across the organization’s three sites. This is a highly visible, hands-on role responsible for overseeing the engineering and maintenance functions and supporting a significant pipeline of capital and technical initiatives. The Engineering Manager will play an important role in ensuring the organization’s engineering capabilities continue to evolve in step with its growth.

Summary of the Role

Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President, and operating as part of the organization’s senior leadership structure under the direction of the President, the Engineering Manager will lead the engineering and maintenance functions across Northern Cables’ manufacturing facilities.

As Engineering Manager, you will lead a multidisciplinary team of engineers and maintenance personnel, with overall accountability for capital projects, equipment reliability, and technical execution across the organization. You will provide direction across a broad range of engineering activities, including equipment installation and commissioning, process improvement, and plant support, ensuring alignment between engineering priorities and operational needs. Operating within a hands-on, highly collaborative environment, you will play a central role in connecting engineering, operations, and sales, ensuring the business is well-supported from a technical standpoint.

This is a highly hands-on role, requiring a strong presence on the plant floor, with a pragmatic, solutions-oriented approach. You will work closely with your team to troubleshoot issues, support decision-making, and ensure projects and priorities are progressing effectively. Rather than operating as a specialist, you will act as a leader and guide for the team, enabling others to execute while maintaining visibility across all major initiatives. This includes reinforcing accountability, supporting the development of your team, and strengthening continuity across the plants.

You will play a key role in supporting a significant pipeline of capital projects, including new equipment, plant expansions, and the development of a planned fourth facility. This includes involvement in planning, budgeting, and execution, working closely with internal stakeholders and external partners to ensure projects are delivered effectively and aligned with the organization’s long-term growth objectives.

Beyond project and technical guidance, you will bring clarity to how engineering work is managed across the organization. This includes strengthening coordination across teams, improving visibility into projects and priorities, and ensuring a more consistent and scalable approach to execution. You will support a culture of ownership and collaboration, enabling the team to operate with greater autonomy while maintaining alignment and accountability across the function.

Is This for You?

You are a hands-on technical leader who is most effective when close to the operation and connected to your team. Your experience comes from a manufacturing or industrial environment where you have worked closely with equipment, projects, and processes, while overseeing teams responsible for execution. You thrive in settings that are fast-paced and evolving, and are naturally present on the floor, engaging with employees, understanding challenges in real time, and contributing to problem-solving as issues arise.

You bring a strong foundation in leadership, with experience guiding technical teams and supporting individuals with varying levels of experience. You have led engineers, trades, or maintenance teams, providing direction without micromanaging and reinforcing accountability across the group. Your style is both approachable and direct, and you communicate in a way that builds trust, encourages collaboration, and keeps teams aligned. You are able to adapt your approach to different audiences and can work seamlessly with technical and non-technical groups. You understand how to balance being hands-on with maintaining oversight, and are confident in supporting decision-making while ensuring risks are managed appropriately.

You are resourceful, adaptable, and solutions-oriented. You have experience working in environments that are still evolving in terms of systems and framework, and are motivated by the opportunity to bring greater clarity and consistency over time. You know how to prioritize effectively, manage multiple projects and demands, and communicate clearly across teams. Your background includes exposure to capital projects, equipment installation, or process improvement, and you bring enough technical depth to earn credibility with the team.

Above all, you operate with a high degree of ownership and accountability. You understand the demands of a 24/7 manufacturing environment and are willing to be available when needed to support the team and the operation. You are also capable of navigating people-related matters as they arise, approaching situations with sound judgment and fairness.
