Position Summary
This position is for an engineering manager, a manager of supervisors, a leader of teams for the Southern Company Process Chemistry Group. General responsibilities of this team include providing company assets with expert support in process engineering and chemistry such as steam water chemistry, water treatment, wastewater treatment, and air pollution control. This group is a part of a corporate shared services organization serving the many companies of Southern Company.
Major Job Responsibilities
- Lead and administer multiple teams of engineers, chemists and specialists in proficient delivery of subject matter expertise in conceptualization, design, procurement, installation, operation and maintenance of energy and power infrastructure.
- Be a champion for Process Safety Management (PSM) practices including Inherent Safe Design, Process Hazard Analyses (PHA, HAZID, HAZOP, etc.), Hazard Mitigation Analyses (HMA), Design Hazard Reviews, Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR) and Management of Change (MOC).
- Hire, equip, prepare, counsel, performance-manage and maintain teams of professionals.
- Prioritize and delegate work effectively
- Ensure predictable delivery of work products (safety, quality, performance, cost, schedule)
- Exemplify intentional, critical review and examination of work processes and products
- Establish and maintain continuous improvement processes
- Effectively communicate complex matters to staff, company leadership, and general audiences.
- Lead the leaders in design and process safety reviews of existing and new facilities.
- Review and validate process equipment design specifications, safeguard specifications, commissioning and test data.
Position Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, chemistry or similar science is required.
Experience:
- Two or more years of experience in leading engineers and/or chemists as a manager, supervisor or team leader
- At least 10 years working as engineer or chemist in power generation, paper mill, petrochemical, refinery, gas operations, pipeline or other heavy industrial processes (REQUIRED)
- Five or more years of direct application of PSM practices
- Proven track record of optimizing and troubleshooting complex mechanical and chemical processes.
- Recognized to have strong communication and presenting skills of complex matters to various audiences
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Proven, effective leader of people and teams
- Expertise in the processes and operation of power plants, steam water chemistry, water & wastewater treatment, and natural gas processing.
- Knowledge of fossil fueled-combustion systems, gas/liquid contacting systems, and pollutant emission control.
- Proven exceptional analytical ability. Easily grasp advanced technical concepts.
- Exceptional communication and presentation skills
- Proficiency in the use of the Microsoft suite of software.
