Position Overview:

The Engineering Manager is the primary leader responsible for driving resources, strategy and management of the department responsible for delivering professional engineering services of the region. This position reports to a Vice President, and Regional Operations Manager. The individual is responsible for the management, operations and coordination of all technical, human resources, marketing/sales, and financial activities for all engineering related services. The Midwest Engineering Manager has direct reports that include (but not limited to) Project Manager(s), and Engineers. The Engineering Manager should be a licensed Professional Engineer, with extensive experience managing teams within a professional services consultant environment.

Responsibilities:

Perform duties, including, but not limited to:

  • Consistent and professional client communication
  • Hiring, management and accountability of the entire office engineering team.
  • Envisioning market growth opportunities, while streamlining focused marketing, pipeline development, and sales efforts. Active participation with RD Group for all growth opportunities.
  • Active engagement, as necessary, with scope development and contract negotiation.
  • Willingness to actively engage in client or project tasks and details, as required, while creating streamlined workflow and optimized utilization of each staff member.
  • Ensure through team the planning, scheduling, conducting, and coordinating the technical aspects of projects.
  • Ensure through team the proper day-to-day operations of professional and technical staff assigned to projects.
  • Responsible for overall Engineering team performance, quality control, and completeness of all data and reporting.
  • Maintain company-wide systems for assigning, monitoring, and reviewing progress and accuracy of work, directing efforts, and providing technical guidance.

  • Active participation with RD group for all growth opportunities.
  • Ensure through team the development and review of project data, QA/QC, and end result deliverables for accuracy and completeness for all projects.
  • Assess and present leadership improvements to processes to increase efficiency and profitability.
  • Ensure team performance, accuracy and completeness of all data and reporting, included scope held by subconsultants.
  • Oversight of effective preparation of proposals, budgets, workload projections and invoices, and collecting accounts receivable.
  • Effective leader and communicator with team and clients.
  • Participation in Client/Agency meetings for sales purposes and to resolve project concerns.
  • Serve as a representative of the company, as required, to support internal team and Cole’s clients at meetings, presentations, and public hearings related to assigned projects.
  • Shared responsibility in revenue generation to meet regional goals.
  • Responsible for profit/loss, under the supervision of the VP, ROM

Skills and Special Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent
  • Registered Professional Engineer within the state
  • Minimum 10 years of Project Management experience
  • Progressive leadership mindset; and a nimble member of the overarching team
  • Signature authority of project forms for agencies, RFQs, RFPs and general submittals.
  • Technical expert in relevant areas of Engineering.
  • Leads by Example
  • Experience in training and developing progressive staff skill and competency.
  • Mastery in skills for all aspects of subordinate team member(s)’ responsibilities to include:
  • Ability to solve complex problems using sound professional judgment, creativity, and innovation.
  • Efficient project management of multiple concurrent projects.
  • Effective communicator and able to work on and lead teams.
  • Ability to effectively discuss project issues with clients and reviewing agencies.
  • Project scheduling and meeting deadlines.
  • Proficient in understanding client expectations, budgeting, proposal writing, invoicing and collecting accounts receivable.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Project, Word and Excel.
  • Exercises judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criterion for obtaining results.
  • Has responsibility and accountability for the quality, effective execution and financial success of projects under their direction.
  • Makes decisions on team performance and project issues and implementation of policies and procedures.
  • Communication is required with senior staff on significant items.
  • Recommendations are provided on overall company policies and procedures to be reviewed by senior leaders.
