Key Responsibilities of the Role:

  • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of project‑specific Environmental and Sustainability Plans.
  • Ensure full compliance with environmental legislation, regulatory requirements, industry standards, and Mercury’s internal sustainability frameworks.
  • Conduct detailed environmental risk assessments and provide expert guidance on mitigation strategies during design, planning, and construction phases.
  • Monitor and report on site environmental performance, including waste management, energy efficiency, water conservation, emissions control, and biodiversity protection.
  • Prepare high‑quality environmental documentation, including audits, inspection reports, regulatory submissions, and client‑facing sustainability reports.
  • Provide technical leadership to project teams, subcontractors, and stakeholders to ensure environmental obligations are understood and achieved.
  • Lead site inspections and audits, identify non‑conformances, and oversee the implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
  • Drive sustainability initiatives such as carbon reduction programmes, circular economy strategies, and resource optimisation measures.
  • Analyse environmental and sustainability data to identify trends, opportunities for improvement, and performance against KPIs.
  • Deliver training, toolbox talks, and awareness sessions to enhance environmental competence across project teams.
  • Maintain robust documentation and records to support compliance, certification, and project close‑out requirements.
  • Represent Mercury at Environmental Reviews, Client Sustainability Workshops, and relevant project coordination meetings.
  • Support corporate sustainability objectives, including ESG reporting, environmental management system improvements, and strategic initiatives.
  • Undertake any additional duties reasonably required by the company, recognising that responsibilities may evolve in line with business needs.

Essential Qualifications:

  • A degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Sustainability, or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience in an environmental or sustainability engineering role within construction, engineering, or a related industry.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental legislation, regulatory frameworks, and best‑practice sustainability standards.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting environmental assessments, audits, and compliance monitoring.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder‑management skills; fluency in English is required, and French is an advantage.
  • Strong analytical, organisational, and problem‑solving abilities with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams and influence positive environmental outcomes.
  • Strong commitment to sustainability, environmental protection, and continuous improvement.
  • High standards of documentation, reporting, and professional presentation.
  • Flexibility to travel as required.
  • Energetic, proactive, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
