About the role

About The Role

We're looking for environmental engineering experts to help train and improve advanced AI models. Your domain knowledge will directly shape how AI reasons through complex environmental problems — from contaminant transport to regulatory compliance — making a real impact on the next generation of AI technology. This is a fully remote, flexible contract role. You set your hours and work on your own schedule.

Organization: Alignerr Type: Hourly Contract Location: Remote Commitment: 10–40 hours/week

What You'll Do

  • Design Complex Engineering Problems — Create advanced, multi-step problems spanning contaminant transport, mass balance in treatment plants, hydrology, pollutant dispersion, and Life Cycle Assessments (LCA)
  • Author Gold-Standard Solutions — Develop rigorous, step-by-step technical solutions — including chemical dosage calculations, hydraulic flow models, and environmental simulations — that serve as benchmark responses for AI training
  • Audit AI Outputs — Evaluate AI-generated remediation plans, environmental impact statements, and technical analyses for accuracy, safety, and adherence to regulatory standards such as EPA guidelines and ISO 14001
  • Sharpen AI Reasoning — Identify logical errors in AI responses — such as incorrect stoichiometry, flawed unit conversions, or failure to account for secondary environmental impacts — and provide structured feedback to improve model reasoning
  • Work Across Core Domains — Engage with topics including water and wastewater treatment, air quality management, EHS compliance, solid and hazardous waste management, and aquatic chemistry

Who You Are

  • Advanced Degree — Master's (pursuing or completed) or PhD in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering with an environmental focus, or a closely related field
  • Strong Domain Knowledge — Solid foundation in one or more areas: aquatic chemistry, wastewater process design, air quality engineering, or hazardous waste remediation
  • Analytically Precise — High attention to detail when checking unit conversions, chemical equations, mass balances, and regulatory compliance logic
  • Clear Communicator — Able to explain complex engineering and ecological concepts in concise, structured written form
  • Self-Directed — Comfortable working independently and managing your own workload asynchronously
  • No prior AI experience required — we'll get you up to speed

Nice to Have

  • Experience with data annotation, quality review, or evaluation workflows
  • Familiarity with environmental modeling software (e.g., AERMOD, SWMM, EPA tools)
  • Background in environmental consulting, research, or regulatory work

Why Join Us

  • Work on cutting-edge AI projects in collaboration with leading AI research labs
  • Fully remote and flexible — work on your schedule, from anywhere
  • Freelance perks: autonomy, variety, and the satisfaction of doing technically meaningful work
  • Gain hands-on exposure to how large language models are built and refined
  • Opportunity to apply your environmental engineering expertise in an entirely new and impactful domain
  • Potential for ongoing work and contract extension
