Role Overview
Full‑time, permanent Fire Sprinkler Designer based in the Greater Toronto Area with hybrid work flexibility. The role combines office/remote design work with regular site visits across the GTA, requiring technical expertise and field readiness. The designer will work independently and collaboratively with engineers, clients, and other stakeholders to design sprinkler systems from concept to final submission.
Responsibilities
- Attend site visits to perform field surveys, collect data, and assess existing conditions.
- Review architectural, mechanical, electrical, structural, and civil drawings and incorporate them into fire sprinkler design.
- Develop sprinkler layouts, demolition plans, and detailed drawings using AutoCAD and HydraCAD.
- Perform hydraulic calculations using HydraCALC.
- Apply and interpret NFPA 13, 13R, 13D, 14, 20, OBC, and other relevant standards.
- Coordinate sprinkler systems with other building components for clash‑free design and proper coverage.
- Prepare equipment room layouts, detail sheets, and full permit packages.
- Assist in preparing project estimates, defining scope, and contributing to proposal development and pricing for fire sprinkler design services.
- Prepare and process Contemplated Change Notices (CCNs) and Site Instructions (SIs) as required.
- Submit and manage building permit applications across Ontario municipalities.
- Participate in internal QA/QC processes using company checklists and standards.
- Provide support to project managers, attend construction meetings, and perform site reviews.
- Assist in training new designers and assessing applicants through technical skill testing.
- Maintain organized project documentation in accordance with company standards.
- Communicate clearly with clients and internal teams throughout the project lifecycle.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned by management.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of experience designing fire sprinkler, standpipe, and fire pump systems.
- Ability to independently prepare shop‑quality sprinkler design drawings.
- Strong knowledge of NFPA codes, hydraulic calculations, and sprinkler system components.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and HydraCALC; knowledge of HydraCAD is an asset.
- Familiarity with the Ontario Building Code (OBC).
- Skilled at reviewing and integrating contract drawings across disciplines.
- Capability to perform field/site reviews and prepare sketches from site visits.
- Strong written communication and organizational skills.
- Valid driver’s license and personal vehicle (required for site visits).
Preferred (Assets)
- Experience with HydraCAD, AutoSprink, Revit, BIM coordination, fire alarm systems, and special hazard systems.
- Experience designing for high‑rise buildings and storage/warehouse occupancies.
- Fire Protection Engineering Technology diploma or similar education.
- Certifications such as P.Eng, E.I.T., CET, CTech, NICET, CFAA, CFPS, or BCIN.
