Full Stack Software Developer

Job Summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is in search of a skilled Full Stack Software Developer to join our dynamic team within the Veterans Affairs (VA) Department. This remote role focuses on creating and maintaining a state-of-the-art cloud-based Web Dashboard for EDI healthcare transactions and requires a Public Trust (MBI) security clearance. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop, support, and migrate a cloud-based Web Dashboard application designed for processing healthcare EDI transactions.
• Design, build, and maintain RESTful APIs using Java and/or NodeJS to efficiently retrieve, transform, and serve EDI healthcare records.
• Integrate with internal platform APIs, EDI processing pipelines, and data services to ensure reliable delivery of live and historical EDI transaction data.
• Contribute to and support an Angular-based dashboard front-end, ensuring accurate data presentation to business and clinical users.
• Collaborate with backend C#/.Net and AWS data engineers to establish clean API contracts and ensure reliable data delivery across services.
• Write clean, testable, and well-documented code while actively participating in code reviews.
• Conduct unit and integration testing across backend services and API layers.
• Support deployment, monitoring, and performance optimization of backend services in production on AWS.
• Promote and apply best software engineering practices within an Agile framework.
• Utilize Git and GitHub for version control, branching, pull requests, and collaborative development.

Required Skills and Experience

• Proven experience with Java/NodeJS backend integration.
• Hands-on experience with Angular for front-end UI development.
• Skilled in designing and consuming RESTful APIs within healthcare or enterprise environments.
• Significant experience building backend services that serve structured EDI or healthcare data.
• Strong expertise in Java and JavaScript/TypeScript/NodeJS, particularly in API design and data transformation.
• Familiarity with EDI data formats.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS/Azure), including services like API Gateway, Lambda, and S3.
• Proficient in Git and GitHub workflows.
• Experience with unit and integration testing frameworks (JUnit, Jest, etc.).
• Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders and other engineers.
• Experience with Agile methodologies and tools like JIRA.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a distributed team environment.
• Strong attention to detail regarding data accuracy, especially for healthcare records.
• Skilled in conducting code reviews and providing constructive feedback.

Desired Experience

• Knowledge of Electronic Data Interchange (X.12) Medical Claims formats.
• Familiarity with web document submission processes.
• Understanding of healthcare payer/PBM systems, clearinghouses, or pharmacy operations.
• Knowledge of VA systems, ARS workflows, or 275 claim attachment transactions.
• Familiarity with HIPAA compliance in API and web application development.
• Experience with accessibility standards for government applications.
• Knowledge of containerization tools such as Docker.
• Understanding of C#/.Net services for cross-team integration.
• Experience working with distributed U.S. based teams.

Formal Education

Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
