Head of Engineering
VAULTED AG
About the role
About VAULTED
VAULTED is a Swiss construction technology company born out of the Block Research Group at ETH Zurich. The company designs and delivers the Rippmann Floor System® (RFS) — a digitally prefabricated, unreinforced funicular floor system in concrete, achieving up to 70% less mass, 90% less steel, and 80% lower embodied carbon than conventional reinforced-concrete slabs. Every component is designed for disassembly, reuse, and recycling — making it one of the first fully circular structural products for the built environment. The company is at a pivotal stage, commercially active in Switzerland, Belgium, and the UK, and rapidly expanding. Being part of VAULTED means being at the forefront of computational design, engineering, digital fabrication, and circular construction, transforming the construction industry for sustainable growth.
The Role
We are hiring a Head of Engineering to own the structural engineering function at VAULTED. This is a senior, hands-on role: you will lead project delivery from design through construction, represent VAULTED as the technical authority in client and certifier meetings, and build the engineering team as the company scales. A core part of this role is building a robust project delivery framework to guarantee consistent quality and efficiency across projects. You will work at the intersection of advanced structural design, industrial prefabrication, and real-world construction delivery. The role carries direct responsibility for certification across European markets, mentoring of junior engineers, and collaboration with the CTO on R&D. It is central to VAULTED’s ability to execute on its project pipeline and grow.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical leadership: Serve as the primary structural engineering authority in client meetings, design reviews, and negotiations with architects, developers, and approval bodies.
- Project delivery: Responsible for the engineering execution of projects end-to-end — from structural concept through on-site delivery — ensuring integrity, compliance, and schedule adherence.
- Certification & regulatory: Lead certification processes and manage relationships with approval bodies across European markets. Maintain regulatory compliance for all products and projects.
- Team building: Manage and mentor structural engineers and junior team members. Establish engineering standards, review processes, and a culture of rigour.
- R&D collaboration: Work with the CTO on structural analysis, computational modelling, and design-to-production workflows.
- Commercial-technical support: Provide engineering input during the sales process — feasibility assessments, structural concept proposals, and technical due diligence for prospective projects.
Requirements
- Degree in structural or civil engineering (MSc or equivalent); professional accreditation (e.g., IStructE, PE, SE, or similar) is a must.
- 6+ years of hands-on experience in structural engineering project delivery, ideally including timber, steel, or prefabricated construction.
- Track record of leading complex, multi-stakeholder engineering projects from analysis through execution and handover.
- Advanced knowledge of structural analysis and modelling; familiarity with computational design tools is a plus (coding ability welcome but not essential).
- Strong communication skills with external stakeholders: credible and effective with architects, developers, general contractors, and certification authorities.
- Experience managing and mentoring engineers at different seniority levels.
- Working knowledge of European building codes and certification frameworks (e.g., CE marking, ETA processes).
- Fluency in English and a basic command of German are required.
Nice to Have
- Experience in prefabrication, modular construction, or industrial delivery environments.
- Background in innovative structural systems.
- Familiarity with sustainability certifications (e.g., LEED, BREEAM, Minergie, DGNB) and lifecycle assessment in construction.
