Head of Platform Engineering
MidiVPN
About the role
Company Description
MidiVPN is transforming digital privacy by empowering users with complete control over their network. Unlike traditional shared VPN services, MidiVPN provides a dedicated and private infrastructure through solutions such as the Virtual VPN Router, VPN-Box, Home-VPN, and Office-VPN. Leveraging open-source technologies like OpenWrt, WireGuard®, and AdGuard®, MidiVPN ensures zero shared resources and seamless deployment. Whether for personal use or business, our solutions prioritize security, privacy, and simplicity. Join us in building groundbreaking tools for secure and autonomous digital communication.
The Context
MidiVPN is building from the ground up. We're developing our own cloud infrastructure, network security stack, and the detection layer that closes the visibility gap most VPN deployments don't know they have. We're not only assembling opensource tools, we're building the platform.
The Role
This is the first platform hire. You will own the full infrastructure scope: cloud capabilities, virtualization, provisioning, activation, monitoring, capacity planning, CI/CD pipelines, network & systems security architecture, and the IDS/IPS that sits at the core of our product. You will make foundational decisions that shape everything built after you.
What You Will Own
- Infrastructure & Cloud: Design and build our own cloud capabilities from scratch. Virtualization, compute orchestration, network fabric. No inherited architecture, no vendor lock-in by default.
- DevOps & CI/CD: Build the deployment pipeline end to end. Infrastructure as code, automated testing, reproducible environments across every layer.
- Network Security: Firewall architecture, IDS/IPS design, and the policy layer governing how traffic moves across the stack.
- Anomaly Detection: Analyze connection patterns and network telemetry to catch what event-based tools and standard logs miss.
What We're Looking For
Not a specific number of years. Not a certification list. We're looking for someone who has built production infrastructure under real constraints, understands the difference between protocol-level security and operational security, and wants founding-team ownership over what comes next. Relevant backgrounds: systems engineering, network security, cloud infrastructure, security research. If your experience sits across two or more of these, that's the profile.
Stack Context
We work primarily in the Linux ecosystem (including openWrt). Relevant areas include virtualization and orchestration, WireGuard and VPN protocol internals, firewall frameworks (nftables, iptables), IDS/IPS design, and infrastructure as code. Specific tool preferences matter less than depth of understanding.
Location
This role is fully remote. We bring the team together in Paris for one to two workshops per month, focused working sessions, not commutes. If you're based anywhere and can travel to Paris occasionally, you're eligible.
Why This, Why Now
The VPN market looks crowded until you look at who it actually serves. Consumer VPNs are built for price-sensitive individuals wanting basic privacy. Enterprise VPNs are built for large IT departments with dedicated security teams and six-figure budgets. Both ends are well served.
The gap is everyone in between — expats, freelancers, remote workers, startups, and SMEs.
- They operate at real threat levels without the budget or headcount of larger organizations.
- They don't need a consumer shared platform subscription.
- They don't need an enterprise suite that takes a quarter to deploy.
- They need something effective, ownable, and sovereign — infrastructure they control, without depending on a vendor who may be logging everything they're trying to protect.
That's the gap MidiVPN is built for. And it's larger than either end of the market acknowledges. The Head of Platform Engineering is the person who makes that promise technically real.
