About the role

ROLE PURPOSE

The Head of Technical & Engineering is responsible for driving product innovation, engineering excellence, and technical capability at BFG Africa. The role leads new product development, R&D, design, and engineering execution, enabling business growth through competitive and high-performance solutions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

New Product Development (NPD)

  • Lead end-to-end product development lifecycle:
  • Concept → Design → Prototype → Industrialisation
  • Align development pipeline with BFG growth strategy
  • Reduce time-to-market for new products

Research & Development (R&D)

  • Lead formulation development (e.g., FRP, resins, materials)
  • Improve:
  • Product performance
  • Durability
  • Cost efficiency
  • Explore new materials, technologies, and applications

Engineering & Product Design

  • Own product and process design capability
  • Ensure designs are:
  • Manufacturable
  • Scalable
  • Cost-effective
  • Develop technical specifications and design standards

Tooling & Industrialisation

  • Lead development of:
  • Tooling, moulds, and production systems
  • Ensure smooth transition from development to production
  • Support operational efficiency through engineering solutions

Project Management

  • Deliver technical projects:
  • On time
  • Within budget
  • To performance requirements
  • Coordinate cross-functional execution

Cost Engineering & Commercial Support

  • Develop cost models for products
  • Support:
  • Pricing strategies
  • Tender submissions
  • Drive value engineering initiatives

Technical Capability & Talent Development

  • Develop and mentor young engineers
  • Build a strong internal technical pipeline
  • Foster a culture of innovation and problem-solving

Industry & Technology Leadership

  • Monitor industry trends and advancements
  • Engage with suppliers and technical partners
  • Position BFG as a technical leader in FRP solutions

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree or National Diploma in engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial or related discipline); a master’s degree will be advantageous
  • Minimum 5–7 years’ experience in engineering, technical, or product development roles within a manufacturing or industrial environment
  • Proven track record in leading end-to-end product development (R&D to industrialisation)
  • Strong experience in composite materials / FRP / polymers and related manufacturing processes (highly advantageous)
  • Demonstrated experience in engineering leadership, managing multidisciplinary technical teams
  • Proven ability to deliver technical projects on time, within budget, and to performance requirements
  • Strong exposure to cost engineering, value engineering, and commercial support (tenders/pricing)
  • Experience working in high-growth, complex, or project-based environments (e.g., infrastructure, rail, utilities, industrial sectors)
  • Solid understanding of design for manufacturability (DFM), tooling, and production processes
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to align technical solutions to commercial outcomes
