Industrial Designer
Penn State Industries
Philadelphia · On-site Full-time Entry Level $65k – $75k/yr Yesterday
About the role
We’re looking for an Industrial Designer to take on full ownership of product development from concept through production.
You’ll design and bring new physical products to life, from early ideas through production.
Our products help woodturners create finished pieces that are used, gifted, and sold, so your work needs to look great, function well, and hold up in the real world.
This is a strong opportunity for someone early in their career to take on meaningful responsibility and grow quickly.
What You’ll Do
- Design and develop new products, including project kits, tools, and machines
- Take ideas from concept through production, including sketching, 3D modeling, prototyping, and manufacturer collaboration
- Create products such as pens, handles, pepper mills, bottle stoppers, and other small-format builds, along with larger tools and equipment
- Work directly with overseas manufacturers to refine designs, review samples, and move products into production
- Collaborate with marketing to support product launches and positioning
- Manage multiple projects at different stages without losing momentum
What We’re Looking For
- Strong 3D modeling skills (Rhino, Fusion 360, or similar)
- Ability to sketch, prototype, and think through physical form and function
- Comfortable working hands-on with tools, materials, and rapid prototyping (SLA, DLP, FDM)
- Experience creating technical drawings and communicating design intent to manufacturers
- Familiarity with tolerances, fit types (press fit, slip fit), and basic GD&T principles
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, especially metals and mechanical components, with the ability to design for production
- Mechanical intuition, with the ability to think through how things are built and how they work
- Organized and able to move projects forward without constant direction
- Clear communicator who can work across teams and with external partners
Bonus if you have experience with:
- KeyShot rendering
- Intricate or themed design work (jewelry-style detail, etc.)
- Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign)
- Woodturning or similar hands-on experience
Qualifications
- BS in Industrial Design or related field
- 2 to 5 years of experience developing physical products
Salary: $65,000 to $75,000
