About the role

About

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.de) currently operates 76 institutes and research facilities in Germany and is one of the leading organizations for application-oriented research. Around 32,000 employees generate an annual research volume of 3.4 billion euros.

This is us… At the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems IWES, the energy transition becomes reality every day. Our focus topics are: Offshore wind energy, hydrogen, testing infrastructure, and digitalization. More than 400 employees – including around 100 students – from over 50 countries work at nine locations in scientific and non-scientific teams on the development of innovative methods to accelerate the expansion of the wind energy and hydrogen economy, minimize risks, and increase cost efficiency. Do you want to shape the future sustainably with us?

This team is looking for you… You will strengthen the "Overall System Dynamics" group at the Bremerhaven site. The group researches methods for the simulation and validation of wind turbines (WT). For this purpose, the "Modelica Library for Wind Turbines (MoWiT)" simulation model is developed and used for real-time simulation in a hardware-in-the-loop environment, as well as for automated simulation and optimization of WT. The team currently consists of four employees and several students. Regardless of projects and backgrounds, we support each other. Open exchange and teamwork, also across team and site boundaries, are particularly important to us.

Responsibilities

This is what you will do These tasks await you…

  • You will be involved in the development of validation methods for offshore WT. This includes researching suitable methods, implementing them in Python, and then evaluating their added value and applicability on our test benches.
  • You will also model and simulate offshore WT, participate in the expansion of existing MoWiT models, and be responsible for the setup (including Design Basis and Design Load Cases) and evaluation of MoWiT simulations.
  • Not enough for you? A varied working day is guaranteed!
  • To validate the models, you will independently generate synthetic simulation data and compare it with measurement data from test benches and turbine measurement data.
  • You will document your findings and results in scientific publications and present them at conferences and trade fairs.
  • Furthermore, you will support us, e.g., through research, in project acquisition.

Requirements

What you bring with you What professional background do you have?

  • You have completed your diploma/master's degree with a focus on wind energy.
  • During your studies or practical activities, you have gained experience in the simulation of WT as well as in modeling and programming in the context of WT (e.g., in Modelica, Python, or C).
  • You also have knowledge of offshore WT (e.g., in the field of hydrodynamics and wave theories)? Great, then keep reading!

Your profile will be rounded off by…

  • If you also have knowledge in the application of verification and validation methods, perhaps even in the context of offshore wind energy, that is great, but not a must.
  • Don't worry if your skills don't cover all areas yet. You can also master your career entry with us.
  • We operate internationally at IWES, so English skills, in addition to German, will make your daily work easier.

What You Can Expect

Where do you want to develop?

  • We support you on your individual career path. Whether personal, technical, or methodological, we will find the right training measures for you.
  • It is also possible to pursue a doctorate independently with us. We will actively support you in this!
  • Do you want to contribute to further topics and drive topics forward independently? With us, you actively shape your area of responsibility.

What we offer you…

  • With our flexible and core working hours system, you can shape your workday flexibly.
  • Additionally, you have the option to work remotely with us.
  • You don't know where to accommodate your children in emergencies? We support you with emergency childcare.
  • Employee discounts for events, clothing, vacation & Co. are useful? With us, you can
