Intermediate Backend Engineer

This is a fantastic opportunity for an Intermediate Backend Engineer with NodeJS & AWS Serverless architecture experience to join this award-winning local FinTech on a 1 fixed term contract basis.

This Intermediate Backend Engineer contract is Cape Town-based (remote) with a CTC of R1,2 million per annum.

There is a very high chance this contract will be converted into a permanent role following the initial fixed contract term. THE COMPANY

THE ROLE

As an Intermediate Backend Engineer, you will design, develop, and maintain serverless backend systems on AWS using Node.js, supporting high-scale fintech products used by millions of customers. The role focuses on building API-first and event-driven services, working closely with senior engineers, product, and frontend teams to deliver reliable, production-grade solutions.

You will contribute to the implementation, scalability, performance, and stability of backend services, while gaining exposure to architectural patterns and standards used across the platform. This role offers hands-on experience in a modern, cloud-native environment, with clear opportunities to grow technical depth and responsibility over time. REQUIREMENTS • 2+ years’ experience designing and operating serverless architectures on AWS (e.g. Lambda, API Gateway, event-driven services, etc). • Solid understanding of API-first and event-driven system design. • Proven ability to design and work with SQL and/or NoSQL databases, with a focus on performance and scalability.
