Investment & Insurance Analyst
Karr Barth Administrators, Inc.
About the role
We are a specialized third-party administrator (TPA) focused on nonqualified deferred compensation (NQDC) and corporate-owned life insurance (COLI) solutions for large plan sponsors. Our new business team operates collaboratively across two core disciplines, investment analytics and insurance solutions, with each team member owning a primary area of expertise while providing meaningful cross-coverage across the full scope of the team's work.
This Investment & Insurance Analyst role supports both functions. Depending on your background, your primary ownership will lean toward fund research and financial modeling or toward life insurance illustrations and COLI analysis, but in either case, you will develop working fluency across both areas and contribute to the team's shared responsibilities, including business development support and lead generation.
We are open to hiring at the Analyst or Senior Analyst level depending on experience. The right candidate brings strong technical skills in at least one of the two core disciplines, clear communication instincts, and the collaborative mindset to function as part of a tight-knit, high-accountability team.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Fund Research & Investment Analysis
- Evaluate and monitor fund lineups for NQDC plan sponsors, assessing competitiveness, performance, fees, and correlation to plan liabilities
- Support fund analysis for prospective clients, including performance attribution, benchmarking, and liability-matching assessments
- Maintain and update fixed rate fund offerings, target date fund underlying allocations, and CPI-linked components
- Conduct public company research as part of the new business qualification process
Financial Modeling
- Support financial modeling for new business opportunities, integrating fund and insurance illustration data into quantitative client models
- Maintain model accuracy and version control; flag inconsistencies or assumption gaps proactively
- Contribute to model review and quality assurance across the team's analytical output
Insurance Illustrations & COLI Analysis
- Run life insurance carrier illustrations for COLI cases, managing inputs, assumptions, and outputs with precision
- Operate our proprietary in-house illustration system and coordinate with carriers to obtain and validate illustration data
- Support new business and administration teams with COLI-specific analysis, including product comparisons, carrier evaluations, and policy performance review
- Serve as a resource to internal team members on insurance product mechanics, illustration interpretation, and policy structure
Business Development & Lead Generation
- Contribute to lead generation initiatives by supporting outreach to life insurance and wealth management professionals
- Prepare analytical and research materials that support prospect conversations and new business opportunities
- Engage joint work agents, wealth managers, and other investment professionals to identify opportunities and support relationship development
Team Operational Efficiency
- Provide cross-functional backup coverage across the team's investment and insurance responsibilities
- Follow established checklists and workflows for recurring tasks; contribute to process documentation and knowledge transfer efforts
- Partner with IT to identify opportunities to automate repeatable analytical and operational tasks
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
Strong candidates will have deep expertise in at least one of the two core disciplines, investment analysis or life insurance, and genuine interest in developing working knowledge of the other. NQDC or COLI-specific experience is a meaningful plus but is not required; we will provide structured training on the corporate application of these products for the right candidate.
- 2–8 years of experience in investment analysis, financial services, life insurance, executive benefits, or a closely related field
- Demonstrated technical depth in fund evaluation, financial modeling, or life insurance illustration work
- Familiarity with Morningstar or similar investment research platforms, carrier illustration software, or both
- Comfortable interpreting and validating financial models and insurance outputs; able to identify errors and flag assumptions that need revisiting
- Clear written and verbal communication skills; able to explain complex analytical or insurance concepts to non-specialist audiences
- Organized, accountable, and comfortable managing multiple deliverables with defined deadlines
- Collaborative by nature; this team operates with shared ownership and mutual coverage across functions
- FINRA Series 6 or 7 and/or life insurance/financial services industry designation (e.g., CLU, ChFC, CFA, CFP) a plus, or willingness to pursue
- Interest in contributing to business development and lead generation over time
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
- 0–3 Months: Operational on core tools, workflows, and recurring responsibilities; building working knowledge of NQDC and COLI plan design fundamentals and the team's analytical processes
- 3–6 Months: Independently executing primary responsibilities with light oversight; contributing to new business analysis, prospect materials, or illustration work depending on area of strength; providing cross-coverage support as needed
- 6–12 Months: Recognized as a reliable resource across the team's analytical and insurance functions; contributing to lead generation initiatives and process improvement; deepening cross-functional knowledge beyond primary specialty
WHY THIS ROLE
Most analytical roles ask you to go deep in one lane. This one asks you to go deep in your primary area and build real fluency in an adjacent one, which makes you more valuable over time and gives you a broader platform to grow from.
If you have a strong technical foundation in investments or life insurance, want to work in a specialized and intellectually interesting corner of the market, and thrive in a collaborative team environment where your work has direct business impact, we'd like to talk.
Candidates are evaluated on a rolling basis. Placement as Analyst or Senior Analyst will reflect experience and demonstrated skills.
