IT Infrastructure Engineer
ifo Institute – Leibniz Institute for Economic Research
About the role
About Us
As one of Europe's leading economic research institutes, we offer you the opportunity to work closely with users while strategically shaping IT infrastructure, from firewall policies to the MS 365 tenant. We provide full technology breadth from on-premise to cloud, flat hierarchies, and real influence on the direction of our IT development.
We, the ifo Institute, are among the leading economic research institutes in Europe. We address economically and economically policy-relevant issues at the highest scientific level with international appeal and develop research-based recommendations for action for politics, business, and society. Through our five fields of action – research, talent development, policy advice, participation in public debates, and information/service – we contribute to maintaining and increasing sustainable economic prosperity and social participation under constantly changing framework conditions.
Your New Job Will Include...
- Operation, further development, and security of our network and firewall infrastructure for around 300 digital workplaces, including switches, VLAN, VPN, and WLAN.
- Strategic management of our IT security. Our EDR runs as a managed service (MDR), so operational effort is low. Your role: Prioritize and close vulnerabilities, consistently implement patching, and further develop our security level with a view to standards like NIS2 and BSI-Grundschutz.
- Administration of our hybrid IT infrastructure with Hyper-V, Windows Server, and MS 365 (EntraID, Intune, Exchange Online). Here you will get to know cloud and on-premise solutions equally – a combination not often found in many corporate IT departments.
- Support for our colleagues from science, management, and service in all IT matters, via our service desk with a ticketing system, on-site, by phone, or via remote maintenance. We are an in-house team and know our users by name.
- Automation and documentation of recurring processes, for example with PowerShell or Intune policies, to free up time for new things within the team.
- Scope for design instead of pure task completion. In a twelve-person team with a flat hierarchy, your ideas will directly influence our network and security architecture.
What We're Looking For...
- Interest and experience in network and firewalls, whether initial exposure from training or studies, or several years of practical experience. Fundamentals in TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, and VPN are helpful.
- Enjoyment of IT security topics such as vulnerability management, patching, logging, or incident response. You don't need to be an expert here; strategic thinking and a passion for the subject are sufficient as a starting point.
- Basic knowledge of Windows Server and MS 365 (EntraID, Intune, Exchange Online) to quickly integrate into the team.
- An IT-related education, such as a vocational training as a System Integration Specialist (Fachinformatiker*in Systemintegration), a computer science degree, or a comparable path on which you have acquired your knowledge.
- A friendly and helpful approach to colleagues and users.
- Curiosity and initiative, meaning a desire to try things out and actively shape our IT.
- Very good German and English language skills.
- You don't meet all the listed criteria? That's not a disqualifier. We value potential, willingness to learn, and teamwork.
As Part of Our Team...
- You will fulfill a task that provides meaning: You support the work of our scientists and thus contribute to our public mandate.
- You will have a secure, permanent employment contract in full-time/part-time (full-time = 40.1 hours/week).
- You will receive remuneration according to TV-L, the amount of which depends on prior knowledge and experience.
- You will receive a company pension plan (VBL) in addition to statutory pension insurance.
- You will receive a so-called Munich allowance if the prerequisites are met.
- We will equip you in the best possible way, with modern and comprehensive resources for your daily work.
- You will have the opportunity to utilize our further training options and develop professionally and personally.
Work-Life Balance
- We support your work-life balance with flexible working hours and our options for mobile working.
- You will take advantage of our company "holidays" during the year (half a day on Shrove Tuesday and the 24th and 31st of December, each full day).
- Our family service is available to you for advice and support on family and care issues if needed.
Environment
- You can expect mutual support, personal appreciation, and respect.
- You will work in close proximity to the English Garden and the Isar river.
- Enjoy our beautiful campus garden with historic buildings during breaks, for a coffee in between, or for exchanges with colleagues.
Support
- After passing the probationary period, you are entitled to a relocation cost subsidy if the move is from a radius of 200 km or more to Munich or its surrounding area.
Our membership in the Familienpakt Bayern strengthens our measures for work-life balance. We are committed to the equal treatment of all employees and create a discrimination- and harassment-free working environment. All qualified applicants will be considered equally regardless of ethnic or national origin, color, religion, sex, age, sexual orientation, or disability.
