Your Tasks
The IT of the PTB is organized into 5 departments and divided between the Braunschweig and Berlin sites, which work closely together. The 9.55 "High-Performance Computing" department at the PTB Berlin site operates compute servers and a high-performance computing cluster under Linux for demanding scientific calculations as a service for the PTB's technical departments, as well as further virtualized server infrastructure. You will support our team with the following activities:
- Administrative tasks in the area of Linux, OSS and Windows Server
- Responsibility for IT user management and access rights management at the Berlin site, as well as further automation of processes in server operation
- Participation in the administration of the PTB's High Performance Compute (HPC) cluster
- Support and assistance for scientific users; familiarizing new PTB users with the use of HPC capacities for PTB research
- Provision and installation of discipline-specific physical applications in the field of Computational Physics (e.g. FEM software, OpenFOAM, Geant4)
- Participation in the strategic further development of the server infrastructure, with a focus on container technology, scalability, robustness, energy efficiency, AI applications
- Maintenance and documentation of software installation and cluster configuration
Your Profile
- Completed degree (Bachelor / FH-Diplom) in Computer Science, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Computational Engineering, Scientific Computing, Simulation Science or comparable proven qualification.
- Experience in Linux system administration; sound knowledge of Linux automation (Shell scripting, Python, Ansible, etc.)
- Practical knowledge in the administration of servers, services and user accounts, also under Windows
- Willingness to familiarize yourself with new tools in the area of user management and access rights
- Experience in providing scientific software for users in the field of numerical methods and Computational Physics
- Knowledge of distributed file systems, parallel programming models, processor architectures in the field of high-performance computing, modern storage technologies, research data (management) are advantageous
- Ideally, experience in server virtualization (e.g. Proxmox)
- Sensitivity to data protection and IT security concerns; advanced knowledge of BSI requirements
- Strong service orientation and enjoyment of IT support for researchers
- Independent and structured way of working as well as didactic talent
- Strong team and communication skills
- German (C1 level) and English skills (B2 level)
- Willingness to undertake business trips
