PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

The Junior PHP Developer/Programmer will support the growth and sustainability of the company’s software development capability by contributing to the design, development, enhancement and maintenance of the frontend and backend of internal systems and data structures.

This role exists to strengthen capacity within the development function, enabling the creation of new modules and business systems while ensuring the stability and ongoing optimisation of existing platforms — particularly as data volumes and operational complexity continue to increase.

A key objective of the role is to broaden knowledge ownership across the code base and core data architecture, reducing key‑person dependency and supporting a structured succession pathway within the department. The successful candidate will grow into increasing technical responsibility over time, helping the business implement system improvements more efficiently and respond to change in a timely and scalable manner.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

During the initial period, the developer will learn the structures and work environment of the current setup, including familiarising themselves with the code base, data structures and hosting environment.

Once familiar and confident, they will be integrated into the development team, taking on tasks of programming new functionality or patching issues in the current code base or data structures.

They will report any issues or suggestions for improvements to the head of the department.

They will ensure a secure profile, particularly regarding company Intellectual Property.

• Complete a structured onboarding and immersion period to gain a thorough understanding of the existing code base, system architecture, data structures, integrations and hosting environment.
• Review and analyse current systems and documentation to build technical competence and ensure responsible engagement with live environments before implementing changes.
• Contribute to the development of new modules, features and system enhancements in line with business requirements and development standards.
• Diagnose, troubleshoot and resolve bugs or performance issues within existing applications and databases.
• Assist in maintaining data structures to ensure integrity as data volumes increase.
• Collaborate with the projects team to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
• Participate in code reviews and adhere to established coding standards, version control practices and documentation protocols.
• Identify and proactively report system risks, inefficiencies, vulnerabilities or improvement opportunities to the Head of Department.
• Maintain strict confidentiality and safeguard company intellectual property, proprietary systems and sensitive data.
• Continuously develop technical skills and knowledge to grow into increased ownership and responsibility within the development function.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

• Demonstrable literacy in PHP coding with working examples of projects undertaken in the language that show understanding of higher concepts.
• Knowledge of common front‑end libraries such as j Query and Bootstrap is helpful.
• Good skills in SQL and the creation and maintenance of databases in My SQL/Maria DB.
• Working knowledge of data security and secure coding practices.
• Sound logic and problem‑solving skills and a willingness to learn new things and think outside their comfort zone.
• Familiarity with Git version control and Git Hub.
• Working knowledge of Postman, Composer and Jira is advantageous but not essential.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS:

• Degree/diploma in Computer Science, IT, or Software Development.
• Certifications (e.g., PHP, cybersecurity, front end development).
• 0‑2 years of experience in software development.
• Any relevant professional training courses.
