Position Summary

The Manager, Clinical Engineering will oversee the day-to-day operation and maintenance of health‑care technology within their area of responsibility, including all medical devices serviced by CHEO Clinical Engineering or by contracted external resources at CHEO and assigned regional facilities. The role involves managing an in‑house team of technical staff, coordinating contracted vendors, and overseeing engineering project‑management personnel across CHEO and regional sites.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct all human‑resource management functions for the Biomedical Engineering Technologist (BMET) staff within your area of responsibility.
  • Manage the maintenance and repair workloads of the BMETs within your area of responsibility.
  • Set performance and quality standards and develop/implement objective, quantitative audit tools to evaluate technical staff performance.
  • Operate the program quality‑auditing system for all clinical departments.
  • Develop maintenance summary forms and schedules based on manufacturer guidelines for internal/external customers.
  • Approve external vendor repairs for the hospital or their external customers under the approved threshold.
  • Approve purchase orders issued by the department with values up to the approved threshold.
  • In conjunction with senior department staff, plan, develop, and coordinate training strategies for department staff.
  • Participate in the training of Clinical Engineering staff and other hospital staff as required.
  • Write policies and procedures related to Clinical Engineering as required.
  • Evaluate and manage external service contracts and negotiate renewals as required.
  • Participate in corporate capital project teams as needed.
  • Support a culture of patient safety through regulatory compliance, hazard alerts, and incident reviews.
  • Provide ongoing support of the centralized computerized maintenance management system.
  • Perform cross‑functional duties, as assigned and/or required.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.

Qualifications

  • Criminal record check (essential).
  • University degree in an engineering or technology discipline (essential).
  • Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) or registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) (essential).
  • Eligibility for certification as a Biomedical Eng. Technologist (CBET) or a Certified Clinical Engineer (CCE) (essential).
  • Minimum 10 years of profession‑related experience (essential).
  • Minimum 5 years of management experience (preferred).
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint (essential).
  • Bilingualism (English and French) (preferred).
  • Hospital experience with medical gas systems, sterilization systems, emergency power distribution (preferred).
  • Experience in project and contract management (essential).
  • Extensive experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) (essential).
  • Financial management and budget control (essential).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (essential).
  • Sound knowledge of CSA regulations, Health Canada regulations, HARP Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Codes and Regulations (essential).
  • Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
