About the role
Summary
This leadership role oversees accounting for grants, special revenue funds, and capital assets, with a focus on accuracy, compliance, and strong internal controls. The position partners across departments to support financial stewardship of restricted funding and capital investments, while leading process improvements, audit coordination, and team development. This role also helps ensure compliance with GAAP, GASB, federal Uniform Guidance, and applicable Colorado public-sector reporting requirements.
Responsibilities
- Lead and develop the revenue and capital accounting team, including workflow standardization, performance management, and staff development.
- Oversee day-to-day accounting for grants, special revenue funds, and capital assets, including revenue recognition, expenditure tracking, fund balancing, capitalization, depreciation, and construction-in-progress activity.
- Monitor grant budgets and spending to ensure allowability, allocability, compliance, and timely resolution of funding risks or discrepancies.
- Establish and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls that improve consistency, compliance, efficiency, and visibility into financial risks.
- Prepare and coordinate financial reporting for grants, restricted funds, and capital projects, including assigned contributions to annual financial reporting.
- Serve as the primary lead for Single Audit activity related to grants and restricted programs, while supporting external and internal audit requirements.
- Partner with stakeholders across finance, schools, departments, and construction teams to support grant management, capital project cost tracking, and proper stewardship of public funds.
- Drive process improvements through effective use of ERP systems, reporting tools, and AI-enabled solutions to enhance accounting operations and decision-making.
Required Skills
- 5+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory or management role.
- Strong knowledge of governmental accounting, including GAAP, GASB, fund accounting, internal controls, grant compliance, capital asset accounting, and federal Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200).
- Experience preparing financial reports, overseeing restricted funds and capital projects, coordinating audits, and identifying compliance risks or data anomalies.
- Ability to analyze complex financial information, interpret evolving regulations, manage multiple priorities, and communicate fiscal requirements clearly to varied stakeholders.
- Prior public sector experience (county/state/local); K12 experience preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
