Responsibilities
- Oversee the daily technical management of assigned tankers and ATBs.
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and oversight to two Port Engineers supporting the fleet.
- Report to the Vice President of Engineering on fleet performance, maintenance planning, budgeting, and technical initiatives.
- Manage vessel maintenance programs, repair activities, and dry dock projects.
- Coordinate with vessel crews to address operational and technical deficiencies.
- Monitor vessel performance, machinery reliability, and maintenance budgets.
- Ensure compliance with USCG, ABS/Class, Flag State, and environmental regulations.
- Support inspections, audits, and regulatory visits.
- Review technical reports, planned maintenance systems, and procurement needs.
- Collaborate with operations, HSE, and crewing departments to promote safe and efficient vessel operations.
- Assist in troubleshooting major engineering issues and casualty response when necessary.
- Participate in long-term capital planning and fleet reliability initiatives.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree from a Maritime Academy in Marine Engineering or a closely related field preferred; alternatively, significant sailing experience as a Chief Engineer aboard tankers, ATBs, or oceangoing commercial vessels will be considered.
- Prior shoreside technical management or senior Port Engineer experience strongly preferred.
- Proven experience supporting Jones Act vessels is required.
- Strong knowledge of USCG regulations, ABS/Class requirements, and marine engineering systems.
- Experience managing dry dockings, major overhauls, and repair projects.
- Tanker and/or ATB operational experience highly preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership in managing technical personnel or engineering teams.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Ability to travel occasionally to support fleet operations and shipyard activities.
- Former Chief Engineer with transition into shoreside technical management, especially with tanker, tug/barge, or petroleum transportation experience, is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with planned maintenance systems and marine technical budgeting.
- Experience leading Port Engineers or multi-vessel technical operations is a plus.
