Role Overview
To provide technical leadership in mechanical engineering; to develop and implement corporate policies, standards and specifications related to mechanical engineering. Contribute to the execution of the strategy for the engineering team, ensuring alignment with the organization’s overall strategy. Ensure quality standards are upheld in the field of specialization and participate in medium to long‑term business and/or project planning on key projects by providing technical and cross‑functional expertise.
Responsibilities
- Lead key technical projects requiring mechanical engineering input/oversight, including defining and achieving project goals, anticipating and minimizing risks, project management, managing resources and consultants.
- Seek and implement opportunities to add value to the company’s project portfolio.
- Review project documents (policies, standards, specifications, drawings, data sheets) related to mechanical equipment and systems to assure they meet project objectives.
- Oversee mechanical discipline activities on major greenfield and brownfield capital projects, including the oversight of 3rd‑party consultants.
- Lead project teams – establishing project plans and milestones, analyzing risks, developing budgets and delegating work assignments.
- Interface and coordinate with site operations teams.
- Assist commercial teams with technical support in procurement related to mechanical procurement packages.
- Take a coordination role in the construction and commissioning of mechanical systems.
- Lead the process of preparing corporate documents (policies, standards, specifications) related to mechanical engineering.
- Contribute to the execution of strategies related to mechanical engineering to enhance current engineering team practices and performance.
- Prepare business cases regarding projects and initiatives, analyze information and prepare technical documents to support decision making; as Engineering Manager on selected projects, coordinate and direct work of all engineering disciplines, often being the prime contact with the external engineering firm.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Formal professional designation in mechanical engineering either in Ontario or with a pathway to attain licensing in Ontario.
- 10+ years of related work experience.
- Experience with sizing, selection, engineering, construction and commissioning of relevant mechanical systems.
- Experience with mechanical engineering aspects of projects of varying scope and complexity from planning to commissioning stages.
- Experience with engineering management of medium‑sized projects, including development and management of scope of work, schedules, budget, and coordination; working with engineering consultants, vendors, contractors and other stakeholders.
- International experience.
- Project management or operational experience is an asset.
- Fluency in Portuguese, Spanish, or French is an asset.
Personal Attributes
- Strong communications and presentation skills – with Management, Site staff, Consultants and Contractors.
- Works well both in a corporate environment as well as on site in projects and operations.
- Able to travel for frequent but short periods.
