About the role

Based in Vicuña’s Vancouver office, reporting to the Director, Project Engineering, the Mechanical Engineering Manager will lead the mechanical engineering function for the Owner’s team across all scope elements and phases of the project’s development. As the Manager, Mechanical Engineering, you will be responsible for ensuring the mechanical facilities required by the project are safe, technically sound and cost effective. Additionally, a key area of responsibility will be ensuring the design and procurement of these facilities embed the necessary operability and maintainability considerations required to support remote, high altitude, large throughput operations such as this.

To fulfil these responsibilities, you will leverage significant prior experience in either the design, operation or maintenance of large-scale, complex mining and minerals processing projects. You will have a thorough understanding of all the relevant processing unit operations, equipment and associated supporting infrastructure, enabling you to provide necessary expertise, analysis and advice into project decision making and leadership processes.

In addition to providing technical advice and leadership, this position provides a governance and assurance function over the engineering program to ensure the project achieves its safety, quality, cost, and schedule objectives. The incumbent will play a pivotal role in stewarding design maturity, value improvement, and technical risk management across all phases of the project. To ensure successful, regular site visits are required.

Key Responsibilities: • Lead the Owner’s mechanical engineering function to ensure safe, cost-effective, and technically sound project outcomes. • Ensure operability and maintainability considerations are fully embedded within the project design development. • Facilitate interdisciplinary workflows and knowledge sharing to ensure all aspects of the facility are fully integrated. • Cascade established engineering governance frameworks, standards, and assurance processes. • Implement safety in design processes as it relates to the function. • Lead identification and mitigation of mechanical engineering risks and opportunities. • Oversee the work of the EPCM and OEM contractors to ensure scope delivery is fully integrated and compliant with project requirements. • Champion value engineering and design optimization initiatives to drive schedule and cost improvements. • Review and/or develop engineering scopes of work for engineering contractors, subcontractors and related entities within the Project. • Evaluate technical portions of bid submittals, oversee administration of technical portions of contracts with vendors for the provision of equipment, vendor engineering and technical support. • Provides guidance and counsel to the Project and site management teams on applicable processes, practices, and existing/proposed local, state and federal regulations. • Lead, mentor, and develop a diverse team, fostering technical excellence and a strong safety culture. • Evaluate emerging technologies and opportunities that may improve safety, sustainability, operability or project value.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience: • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. • Minimum 15 years of related professional engineering experience. 10 years minimum directly in the mining / minerals processing industry. • Registration or eligibility for registration, with the Engineers and Geoscientists BC desirable. • Proven track record of delivering large-scale projects, ideally in challenging international or remote environments. • Familiarity with the mechanical plant and equipment typical for this type of facility. e.g., Materials handling, crushing, grinding, flotation, thickening, dewatering, pipelines and pumping equipment • Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary teams across multiple EPCM or JV interfaces. • Strong understanding of mining regulations, environmental compliance, and safety standards. • Proven ability to lead through complexity, ambiguity, and cross-cultural environments. • Exceptional leadership and team-building skills and is able to motivate, lead and drive high performance and execution. • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including verbal and written presentations, ranging from technical team members to executives and boards. • Can effectively influence and manage relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to achieve required outcomes. • Ability to work in a diverse and multicultural environment. • Eligibility to work in Canada is required. • Fluency in English; Spanish language proficiency (intermediate or higher) strongly preferred. • Ability to pass a high altitude medical in order to travel to site.
