Job Overview

We are seeking a dynamic, motivated and experienced head of Observability Engineering within LPL SRE organization. In this role you will drive LPL’s enterprise observability posture, standards, ensuring end‑to‑end visibility, actionable insights, and proactive detection across applications, platforms, and infrastructure. This role involves working with the observability architect to establish the architectural vision, standards, and reference patterns for observability - spanning metrics, traces, logs, RUM/UI visibility, routing, enrichment, and retention.

This is an exciting opportunity to drive meaningful change and enhancing the advisor and investor experience. If you are passionate about production operations, stability, SRE and Observability and have a track record of success, we invite you to apply and be part of our journey toward greater resilience and efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a multi‑year observability architecture roadmap aligned with enterprise modernization initiatives.
  • Define the target state for observability platforms, data pipelines, and telemetry strategy.
  • Establish a unified architectural vision for cross-domain observability, automation, and intelligent insights (AIOps).
  • Observability Platform License and Cost Optimization
  • Work with the observability architect to define and build telemetry quality frameworks, log pipelines, cardinality, data governance, PII handling, and access controls.
  • Establish and build standards for SLO/SLI definitions, alerting best practices, and error-budget-driven improvement.
  • Review major incidents, identify observability gaps, and evolve architecture and tooling.
  • Design and build end‑to‑end observability patterns across UI, RUM, metrics, traces, logs, enrichment, routing, and retention.
  • Provide guidance and build reusable assets (templates, SDKs, reliability/observability-as-code patterns).
  • Enable frictionless onboarding and self‑service integrations into telemetry pipelines and dashboards.
  • Build, lead and empower a high performing team of observability engineers

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of observability tooling and ecosystem (Open Telemetry, Dynatrace, ELK, Datadog, Grafana, Splunk, etc.).
  • Proficiency in designing logging, metrics, tracing, and alerting pipelines.
  • Familiarity with SRE principles, reliability patterns, AIOps, and event correlation strategies.
  • Experience defining enterprise-level telemetry and resilience standards.
  • Exceptional cross‑team collaboration, communication, and architectural storytelling.

Core Competencies

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on collaboration and relationship‑building.
  • Able to communicate effectively with CXOs
  • Ability to influence and drive change across the organization.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to translate data into actionable insights.
  • Achieve a 30% reduction in MTTD and MTTR within the first year of operation
  • Able to identify offending service and root cause for at least 70% of incidents within 15‑20 mins using observability platforms
