Operational Accountant

Our client in Germiston, Johannesburg is looking to appoint an Operational Accountant. Ideally someone who has completed their degree and has 2-3 years experience. It is a mid-level role, and the successful candidate will gain tremendous exposure and learning in the operational accounting space.

Someone who has solid audit experience and are looking for that next step in their career. The position requires work at the client's other sites from time to time and own car and valid driver’s license is essential. Position works across multiple systems and complex information. The ideal candidate needs to be competent in learning new systems and processes quickly.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Supervise operational Accounts Payable functions and involvement with Accounts Receivable as needed.
• First line review and first line approval for financial transactions on the accounting system before final posting to ensure that all transactions are processed accurately (e.g. Correct treatment of VAT, correct account allocation etc.).
• Review creditors reconciliations.
• Point of escalation for Creditors.
• Review VAT reconciliations and submission of monthly VAT returns for all companies.
• Maintain the Fixed Asset Register and perform asset accounting and cost-analysis.
• To provide support to the finance team by preparing regular and ad hoc financial reports and statements from the accounting and finance systems.
• Perform accounting computations and calculations accurately and try to identify if there are discrepancies.
• Develop solutions to resolve discrepancies and errors.
• Perform financial reviews and analysis and suggest an appropriate course of action.
• Adhere to and ensure Tax, VAT and SARS compliance.
• Apply the basic accounting principles, knowledge, and techniques to analyse variances, assist in production of journals, and perform routine accounting activities (including Cost Type, Cost Centre and Cost Unit accounting).
• To assist with stock-take across the group.
• Establish and maintain framework of controls for the retail segment.
• Participate in the preparation and process of all internal and external audits.
• Participate in ad hoc financial projects, including but nor limited to, system implementations.
• Participate in group wide projects as needed.

Requirements

• 2-3 years practical working experience as an accountant, operational accountant, or junior financial manager.
• Grade 12
• Completed Accounting Degree
• Exposure to accounting practices in a retail environment is highly advantageous.
• Knowledge and practical experience in accounting systems
• Microsoft Dynamics is beneficial
• Advanced user on Excel is beneficial
• Excellent communication skills
• Valid Driver’s Licence is essential
• Own vehicle is essential
• Time management skills
• Accuracy and attention to detail
• Self-starter

This position is an office-based role, working Monday to Friday from 08:00 – 16:30. This position will require you to visit their retail outlets occasionally, and you will need your own car, to get there.
