Mary Elizabeth House is a transitional housing and support program in Washington, DC, serving young mothers—many aging out of foster care—who are building stable futures for themselves and their children. For over 20 years, we’ve provided a safe, supportive community where residents focus on education, employment, and parenting with guidance from mentors and partners.
Position Summary
The Part-Time Community Manager provides structured oversight of residential life, ensuring a safe, stable, and well-managed living environment. This role is responsible for community coordination, resident accountability, program alignment, volunteer engagement, and facilities management. This position is not a clinical counseling role. Housing is provided as part of the position and is designated for a single adult occupant.
Core Responsibilities
- Resident Community Oversight: Ensure compliance with community standards, support resident accountability, and monitor participation in required programming and meetings.
- Program Coordination: Serve as liaison with program partners, support alignment of resident goals with programming, and facilitate regular check-ins and group meetings.
- Mentorship Program Management: Coordinate mentor pairings, track engagement, and support consistent, meaningful mentor–resident relationships.
- Speaker Series & Community Programming: Plan and manage logistics for monthly speaker series and other community‑building activities aligned with resident needs.
- Facilities & Operations Coordination: Address housing and facility needs, coordinate with vendors, and support smooth day‑to‑day residential operations.
- Safety & On‑Call Response: Provide support during assigned on‑call hours, respond to incidents as needed, and follow established escalation protocols.
Qualifications & Ideal Candidate
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in social work, education, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- Experience working with vulnerable populations in residential, supervisory, or on‑call settings
- Ability to maintain clear boundaries while building trust and supportive relationships
- Strong judgment and ability to respond calmly in high‑stress or complex situations
- Organized, reliable, and comfortable coordinating across residents, partners, and vendors
- Demonstrated commitment to service‑oriented work grounded in empathy, dignity, and accountability
- Interest in posting our work via social media is a plus
Compensation & Benefits
- Annualized Salary: $15,000 – $18,000 depending on experience
- Housing: On‑site private housing provided for a single adult occupant (estimated value: $1,500/month)
- On‑Call Compensation: Negotiated with each candidate; monthly on‑call stipend for availability, with additional hourly pay only for time spent actively responding to needs
- Total compensation includes both direct pay and housing benefits
Schedule Expectations
- Approximately 15 scheduled working hours per week, coordinated with leadership
- On‑call coverage during designated evening hours as assigned
- On‑call schedule will be established in advance
