Akkodis is seeking a Power Plant Test/Commissioning Engineer for a full‑time role with our dedicated team near Pittsburgh, PA or Orlando, FL. Qualified engineer with greater than 5 years of professional experience will support the testing and commissioning of equipment and systems for thermal power plants. This role covers both factory and on‑site (field) testing, ensuring that all electrical and control systems meet customer, design, and quality requirements. The position involves significant hands‑on technical work, documentation, and coordination with cross‑functional teams.

Starting Pay Range: Up to $170,000/yr (salary commensurate based on experience and education levels).


Responsibilities

Factory Testing (FAT)

  • Conduct comprehensive factory acceptance tests for in‑house manufactured electrical equipment, control panels, and protection systems.
  • Prepare and review test procedures, data forms, and test reports.
  • Perform and document the following test activities:
    • Visual and structural inspections (dimensions, nameplates, color, etc.)
    • Insulation resistance and dielectric strength tests
    • Power‑on and calibration of instruments (indicators, converters, controllers)
    • Sequence and functional tests according to diagrams and specifications
    • Alarm and protection relay tests
  • Compilation of test results and preparation of test records.
  • Participation in shipment approval meetings with design, quality, and manufacturing teams.
  • Typical test duration for AVR/excitation systems: ~1 month per product.

Field (On‑Site) Testing & Commissioning

  • Oversee and execute on‑site commissioning of delivered equipment, integrating with other vendors and departments to ensure full plant functionality.
  • Perform system integration, adjustment, and operational verification at the power plant site.
  • Confirm compliance with customer contract requirements and support plant handover.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues during commissioning.
  • Support long‑term site assignments during peak construction and commissioning periods (may require extended travel).

Equipment & Tools

  • Operate and calibrate a wide range of test instruments, including:
    • Digital multimeters, insulation resistance testers, digital phase meters, relay test sets, calibrators, vector multimeters, digital power meters, rotation meters, memory recorders, etc.
  • Read and interpret sequence diagrams and various technical drawings.

Teamwork & Leadership

  • Work as part of a small team (typically 2–3 members: test leader and test engineers).
  • Take direction from the test leader and collaborate closely with other team members.
  • Potential to grow into a test leader role, managing test progress and team assignments.

Qualifications (required)

  • Greater than 5 years of professional experience.
  • Completion of special training for low or high voltage electrical work (or equivalent U.S. certification/license).
  • Ability to read and interpret sequence diagrams, wiring schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Hands‑on experience with electrical test instruments and measurement equipment.
  • Experience in testing and commissioning of control panels, protection relays, and on‑site adjustments.
  • Willingness and ability to travel and work on long‑term assignments at project sites (domestic and international).
  • Strong communication, documentation, and teamwork skills.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with power plant equipment such as:
    • Protection relay panels
    • Automatic voltage regulators (AVR)
    • Thyristor excitation systems
    • Generator monitoring/control panels
  • Familiarity with factory and field‑testing flows, including preparation of test documentation and quality assurance processes.
  • Experience in quality control, safety compliance, and project coordination.
