Job Description

Overview

The Principal Civil Engineer will be responsible for leading functional teams and projects and is regarded as a specialist in the field of structural & civil engineering. As such, they must have in-depth expertise in structural & civil engineering as well as broad knowledge of the structural & civil discipline within the engineering function. The Principal Civil Engineer will be the technical supervisor for the Civil Engineering Team within the Civil Engineering Department and will be tasked to solve complex structural-related problems and will work independently with minimal guidance, keeping the Department Manager appraised as required.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide technical supervision for the Civil Engineering Team, guiding senior and junior engineers and coordinating with Lead Engineers & Designers.
• Ensure discipline procedures, standards, calculation methods, templates, and guidelines are followed and continuously improved.
• Support staff development through coaching, technical training, knowledge-sharing sessions, and reviewing team performance.
• Assist the Discipline Manager with interviews and manpower planning.
• Lead the civil engineering scope across conceptual, FEED, and detailed design phases.
• Independently drive project tasks, resolve technical challenges, and ensure alignment with project contracts, specifications, schedules, and inter-discipline requirements.
• Coordinate closely with other discipline engineers, Client engineering, and the Project Engineering/Project Management Teams.
• Participate in kick-off, design review, vendor, workshop, 3D model, constructability, safety, and client meetings.
• Prepare and review structural/civil analyses, reports, and calculations, including foundation, pile, and drainage system design.
• Apply strong expertise in geotechnical, steel, and concrete structural engineering.
• Perform FEED verifications, gap analyses, and ensure engineering integrity and compliance across all deliverables.
• Review and approve discipline design basis, philosophies, specifications, reports, calculations and procedures.
• Review and approve vendor and subcontractor submissions, and verify design quality through single- and inter-discipline checks.
• Ensure the quality and audit readiness of civil engineering deliverables.
• Evaluate, communicate, and manage design changes with full awareness of project impact.
• Conduct Technical Quality Audits and ensure adherence to Fluence safety KPIs.
• Capture lessons learned and maintain accurate documentation within the Fluence Lessons Learned system.
• Prepare estimates for bid proposals, including technical queries, execution statements, software needs, and work-hour estimates.
• Participate in finalizing deliverables lists and ensure compliance with project specifications.
• Assist construction engineers in resolving site technical issues.
• Support design clarifications, technical decisions, and coordination with site teams as required.
• Present design solutions, technical issues, and project status to internal teams and customers.
• Support the Lead Engineer in negotiating resolutions with Customers when technical issues arise.
• Travel throughout EMEA / internationally as required.

Required Qualifications and Expertise

• Bachelor’s / Master’s degree in Civil or Structural engineering
• 15+ years of experience with a major contractor or consultants predominantly performing EPC projects
• Expert in engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) for complex civil and structural projects i.e Substations, oil and gas, power generation, etc.
• Strong experience in Structural and Civil Engineering softwares (i.e. STAADPro, ETABs, Autocad)
• Strong experience in the design of special structures (i.e HV transformers, AIS & GIS substations, Control room buildings, pile foundations, cable trenches & pull pits, etc.)a
• Expert with applicable codes, standards and regulations used in EMEA Region
• Strong technical skills and experience in finding solution on complex technical issues.
• Solution-orientated mindset.
• Strong communication skills.
• Exceptional project coordination, supervision and execution skills
• In-depth technical knowledge of the detailed design engineering process.
• Business language fluency in German & English
