Our client, a world-renowned engineering and environmental consultancy, is seeking a highly experienced Principal Geotechnical Engineer to lead critical projects within the mining sector. This challenging role is based in our **Kimberley, Northern Cape, ZA** office and requires full-time presence to engage directly with site operations and project teams. You will be responsible for providing expert geotechnical advice and technical leadership on a wide range of mining-related infrastructure projects, including open-pit and underground mine design, tailings storage facilities, waste dumps, and associated civil works. Your expertise will be vital in ensuring the stability, safety, and environmental compliance of these high-risk structures.
This position demands a deep understanding of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, slope stability analysis, and numerical modeling techniques applied to mining environments. You will lead geotechnical investigations, interpret complex data, and develop innovative, cost-effective solutions. The Principal Geotechnical Engineer will also play a key role in client liaison, business development, and mentoring junior engineers. You will be expected to manage multiple projects concurrently, ensuring technical excellence, adherence to budgets, and timely delivery. Key Responsibilities: Provide senior technical leadership and expert geotechnical input for mining infrastructure projects. Conduct and oversee detailed geotechnical investigations, including site characterization, laboratory testing, and field assessments. Perform advanced geotechnical analyses, including slope stability, seismic analysis, and foundation design for heavy loads. Develop and review designs for tailings storage facilities, waste rock dumps, heap leach pads, and mine access roads. Utilize sophisticated geotechnical software for modeling and analysis (e.g., FLAC, GeoStudio suite). Prepare and review comprehensive geotechnical reports, design specifications, and construction monitoring plans. Liaise directly with clients, project managers, mine operators, and regulatory authorities. Lead and mentor a team of geotechnical engineers and technicians, fostering a culture of technical excellence. Contribute to business development activities, including proposal preparation and client relationship management. Ensure compliance with relevant mining regulations, environmental standards, and safety protocols. Oversee geotechnical aspects of construction and commissioning phases, providing on-site support as required. Manage project risks, schedules, and budgets effectively. Stay current with industry best practices, new technologies, and relevant research in geotechnical engineering for mining. Qualifications and Experience: MSc or PhD in Geotechnical Engineering or a closely related field. A minimum of 12 years of relevant experience, with a substantial portion focused on the mining industry. Demonstrated expertise in the design and analysis of tailings storage facilities and mine waste management systems. Proficiency in advanced geotechnical modeling software (e.g., FLAC, Slide, PLAXIS). Strong knowledge of rock mechanics principles and their application in underground and open-pit mining. Experience with seismic hazard assessment and its implications for mining infrastructure. Excellent understanding of South African mining regulations and environmental legislation. Proven ability to manage complex, multi-disciplinary projects and lead technical teams. Strong client-facing skills and experience in business development. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng) registration with ECSA is essential. Willingness to travel to mine sites as required.
